I've always thought that if there was one year that the auto makers came close to all getting it right it was 1957. They're pretty much all good looking. Of course my first car was a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 2drht and my second a 1957 Nomad so I'm a little biased. I wish I still had both.
There's something so friggin cool and sinister about the 57 Ford custom cheapo model.....especially thinking about that factory-supercharged 312 under the hood.
Olds and Buick are so close, but I go with the Buick first, then the Olds, (and I agree, the back windows are so cool) and then the Pontiac, which I think is so much better in the front and rear than the 55 & 56. I like 57 Fords, but the headlights are too much like the crazy looking Ridgid calendar girl (you know the one). So I put the Mopars in 4th and the Ford 5th. Always enjoy your articles, JB.
That Plymouth is sweet! I like that you told people your Lincoln was a 57 Chevy. I used to tell people my 50 chopped merc was a "cobretti" ..."oh! Like in the Cobra movie!? "
My favorite car year of the 50s era. I can say that I don't think anyone produced a car in 1957 in America that did not look good. I always preferred the 57 Fairlane 500 in a 2 door hardtop but looking back, any car of that year was beautiful.
I own a '57 Belair, had a '57 Ranchero, like the rest of the GM stable but would absolutely love to own a '57 Fury. Can't hardly go wrong with any of the 1957 crop.
I agree that 1957 was a great year for the Big 3.My favorite of the 57 cars is the Desoto. As soon as I sell one of my dad's Mustangs I'll be looking.
so right about the 57 Chevy comment....along those same lines, I've ben told where a 32 ford is a kazillion times and it always is something else...
Another vote for '57 Mopars (Chrysler, Imperial, Plymouth, Dodge, & DeSoto) ... Clif Inman's '57 Chrysler Custom (by Joe Wilhelm)
That Plymouth pic makes me want to do a 2D conversion to my '58 4DHT Belvedere like NOW. Dead fucking sexy...
Hard to pick a favorite, but I am driving my 57 Ranchero to this day. But always loved Buicks and Oldsmobiles of that year.
Nice list of 57s. My favorite is the 57 Dodge Royal Lancer. The swept style forward look was awesome. Also the best looking hubcaps of all time.
Supposedly Ford outsold Chevy in 57 yet at least around here you will rarely see a Ford at a car show where as you cannot attend one where there isn't at least a couple of 57 Chevys.
I'll have to agree. These fins... ...are my favorite fins of all. And that Factory Supercharged 289 backed-up that rear-end treatment.
There was an older guy that used to work with me. We'd occasionally talk cars, and he knew I was a Ford man. He was a Hudson man. He'd routinely comment on how many '57 Chevies you'd see at shows, but Ford actually outsold them in that year. He also said that here in the middle of Iowa, the girls drove Chevies and the boys drove Fords. Daddies would buy Chevies for their girls so they wouldn't go too fast.
I've always loved the 57 Buick two-door hardtop. But, I also thought it would look nicer with a mild chopped top. So, as soon as I bought one, I planned how to chop it. Here is a picture of my pride and joy with a 2 - 1/2 inch chop. Hope you enjoy it, TwoChops
57 Olds is my dream car. Well, one of them at least...The rear window, the dip in the belt line, the peaks that run along the roof and deck lid, tail lights, etc. I could go on and on. Bitchen on so many levels! Would love to own one some day
Clif Inmans 57 Chrysler is the car that got me into the Mopar brand back in 1970. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App
