Lucky bastard! Wish my wife would buy me one for my 58 F100. Try these links for info:

Ha, ha, just had my head taken off by my wife as she gently reminded me, "wait a minute, I just sold all my scrapbooking stuff so you can by an engine!!!!"

If it's an early block look by the dist. and get the letter code. If it's a later block look over the top of the oil filter for the code. Then go to the sites posted by Rob68 and look it up. Looks like an early block w/a road draft tube on the lower L. side & the loadamatic dist. I would ditch the intake & that dist. for a 57 & later set up. It will run much better w/the later set up.

If it's a early yblock the casting number near the dist. will read something like ECG, ECH etc. On the later block the casting number over the oil filter will read something like B9AE-F, C1AE-R etc. There's plenty of different numbers so look in both places for them. Post the numbers here & someone will chime in and let you know what you have.

So they made a 292 in 55? maybe they did. Im not sure, maybe for the tbird.

Check heads and crank. Also http://yblockguy.com/

    and for identification...

Looks like a complete setup, a great start to build out. Lot of later parts fit. I'll be so bold to say the 57 was the year before ford detuned the yblock for regulation, but the later can certainly be opened up for more power.

292 was standard in T birds in 55, but also optional in passenger cars (P code or police package). A more likely possibility is that is an M code 272 which featured 4 barrel carb, dual exhaust and higher compression heads. I think it was rated at 182HP if memory serves.

Looks to be a 55-57 272 car or truck. Looking closer at the pics Id like to know what heads are on it. Casting numbers on the heads are found between the exhaust ports or under the flange in the front where the intake bolts up. ECG casting number is the block I have in my 57. Had it bored to 292 when I was putting it together.

ECG-D heads were original to 272 2-bbl carb engines. They were rated 7.6 compression ratio and 162HP. Looks like someone added the dual exhausts and 4bbl carburetor.

Funny thing, I just made a deal on a 292 with a 4 speed with the money my wife made selling her scrapbooking stuff. Picking it up for $225 and the guy may trade for my 223. Wives are cool.

Even if it is a 272, there is LOTS of potential with it! Ted Eaton just built a 355 HP, 272 street motor! :)
