I'm in the process of gathering up some parts to do a nice 78 cased toploader. Recently, I picked up some gears in a lot and am not sure of compatibility. I have what I think is a new old stock 26 tooth Lincoln main cluster and a 19 tooth input shaft with the notched syncro teeth... Also looks unused .Some other stuff came with .. See pics

Do I need the 18 tooth shaft to make this work? From what I read in threads here I'll need to find the Lincoln 2nd gear too?

Thanks for your input. Also if anyone has the parts I need send me a PM

  2. You'll need a 24 tooth second gear. Mac Van Pelt's book will be helpful in your build. He will likely have the parts you need as well.

its a 25 tooth not a 24 and the magic number is 44. keep that in mind

also double check all the tooth count on the cluster because there is a mid 50's ford cluster were i think its 2nd gear has one less tooth and wont jive in a early transmission

Thanks for the info. My cluster gears are 26-22-18-14.

The three gears that make it LZ are the cluster gear, the main drive gear, and second gear. They made two combinations: 18 tooth main drive gear with 26-22-18-14 tooth cluster......and 19T main drive gear with 25-22-18-14 cluster gear. Both combinations used the 24 tooth second gear. The 18mdg/26cluster is the most common set up and is the one that was reproduced. The 19mdg/25cluster is hard to find.....often people have one gear but not the other, and it's expensive to obtain when you find one (if the seller knows what he has).

The rest of the gearset should be 39-48 type Ford gears, including the late style synchro. Likewise, the late synchro means the shifter tower must have the 3" wide second/high shift fork (91A-7230). Much more info on our website.

Was there any reason why they only repopped the 26 tooth set and not the 25? I have had both sets but only from stripping out complete lincoln transmissions . Never tried piecing one together.

I guess I'm looking for a 24 tooth second gear and an 18 tooth input shaft to make a set. Anyone have them?

I'd be willing to swap my 19 toother too
