I Was wondering what track, what year and the cars involved in these photos (I'm especially interested in the RED ONE).. Thanks And if anybody has more photos too share From Austinrod
hmmmm.... is that Fremont? the hills are a bit blurry but that would be my guess, somewhere between 1956 and 1962 looking at the license plate on the 50 Chevrolet towing the model A. Champion Speed shop was in San Francisco, so that's one more clue to it being Fremont. Fremont Drag Strip opened in 1959, and the GM plant that is not in the background yet opened in 1962.
The Giant Champion Speed Shop logo on the side of the "A" would be a dead give away to Nor Cal roots. If you were asking what year the cars are, The rde coupe is a '30-'31 with a deuce grill shell, the little roadster is a '29 on '32 rails, the sedan is a '28 - '29 chopped fairly heavy, the truck is a '53-'55 Ford.
I'm not familiar with Half Moon Bay, I can see those Fremont hills from where I live... if the background was more clear I could say definitly one way or the other if it is Fremont for sure. there also seems to be a freeway missing, though in 1960 there probably would not have been too many cars on it.
Found some champion stuff plus last photo looks too be at Fremont and the mountains look pretty close too the color photos From Austinrod
I'd guess Half Moon Bay, 1957-1962 based on when the track was started, color of the plate on the Chevy, and build styles of the cars.
I'm not much help but those photos are PERFECT! Anybody want to start a build thread for a time machine?
I think that this one was taken in Montana, maybe Helena? The deuce was the former Hawaii Motor Rebuilders but when the owner went to college in Montana, he took the car with him.
I think that this is Fremont. Here are a couple of pictures of Denny Milani in Gotelli's car and of John Batto's fueler at Half Moon Bay. Notice how much closer the hills in the background are to the track, the hills in pictures in question are much farther away.
photos of drags at Salinas Airport mid-fifties, from Andy Southards book "Hot Rods of The Fifties" Look at the background, looks like a match?
Rudy Heridia's T still just KILLS me. I like it WAAAY better this way than the way Buzz Sawyer changed it with the pie crusts and moons after he bought it. But we digress...
I looked at pics of San Jose as well, pretty similar, but I think its Salinas. most everyone forgets that in the fifties most of the airports in So-Cal ran drag races. Everyone just thinks of the big-name race tracks that ran on into the sixties, and forgets about all the local air strip deals.
I don't have much valuable info to contribute here but I just came from another thread with a picture of a car that looks like a modern-day version of the second car pictured above. I'm sure it's not the same one, but I just thought it was ironic. Great pics by the way.
Another vote for Salinas airport drags.......the hills are a match and the fact that Champion Speed was a Nor-cal shop in San Franciso makes sense.
