Features 41-48 Ford and Merc Picture Thread!

  1. I like the smooth, sloping Barris & Ayala-style chops, but I like this too, it's different. They shouldn't all look the same. It looks cool! What are your plans for the rest of the car?

A buddy and I did this 48 back in the early 70s, first chop we ever did and really didn't have a clue what we were doing.young n dumb. The first chop didn't turn out real good so we found a rotten 50 Merc 4dr in the woods and used the roof on the Ford and that worked out good. We never got to finish the car and wish I could find it and see it again.

Right now Im looking for parts. Its in rough shape. It doesnt look that bad in pics but the bottom of the car is gone. The fenders are tacked on. The frame is a 80 monte carlo thats junk.
No trunk, channeled way too low to work. I plan on getting another donor and moving forward from there.
The guy that was building it was using the top for a mold for another car, he made a carson style top for my friends car off of it.
The hood is butchered. I have a 48 cad grille for it but not sure what im using yet.

  6. Quite a project there Mudslinger. Good luck with it and please keep us up-to-date on your progress!

This old girl is original paint, except where I had to repair from hitting a deer and now has a 296 inch flathead with two of uncle max's beauty's. never was I a fordor guy until I landed this one cheap. It's so easy when you have passengers. I will drive this car the way it is until I die.

LOVE this car!!! About ten years ago, a buddy of mine that is a well known writer (but I will leave him unnamed in this case) was charged with doing a "Pro's Pick" award at Del Mar. We hung out all day Saturday and he bounced possibilities off of ElPolacko and myself, but this car was one of the top three he had to chose from. I did everything could to sway him to this one as the final, but in the end he ended up choosing another less polarizing choice... Too bad. If the owner of this car knew how close he came to getting the "Major Award", he'd probably die...

Some odds and ends from old magazine features that I like:
    47CvtTonyFrennLo.jpg 47Tudor.jpg PeteBrock46.jpeg PeteBrock46-2ndVersion.jpg
The third and fourth pictures are both of Pete Brock's Cadillac-powered '46, built when he was in high school and at Art Center. I personally like the earlier solid-color version, but the later version with racing stripes got him some magazine coverage.

  15. Way cool shots, guys. Thanks for all the recent additions!

Must be a new record for images of '42 Fords!

  16. Wow, that 3-window version is cool. Lots of work there.

Yeah...that 3 window looks like a factory original! (with '40s Chrysler influence, of course!)

I've been really hot on the 46-48s for about a year and a half now. Until I can afford an old car again, I will use threads like this to grab pics of cars that I like in order to collect ideas. Huge thanks to the person who posted links to Rikster's photo archives- holy moly! Thanks folks.

    Thank you.

Mr. Brown I like your Tudor as well. Newer style, but quite sharp. Did your nose trim get dented?

I want to add, for my money one of the nicest chops of any post-war Ford coupe I've ever seen is in Tex Smith's 'How to Chop Cars' that was being done by one of the masters of chopped tops: Dick Dean. The problem is there are no 'after' pictures of it. If anyone has more information, or pictures of that particular car, please post. Dick Dean slanted the door posts, (like he did with 50s Mercs) and in the previous images there are a couple done like that. In my humble opinion, this adds something extra that makes for a perfect chop (not to take away from those that aren't), and as the builder of a '48 Coupe, if I can't find all the parts to make mine a three window, I'm definitely going to chop it that way. Thanks to all, for all the pictures. They make we want to get back to work on mine, as soon as it cools off here in Alabama.

Hidden, I have a new favorite car, you have one beautiful ride! How did you get the rear that low? I have a lot to learn to make mine look half that good ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1409713990.469750.jpg
I guess I need to get it in the garage first.
