saxman what tach are you talking about? A Mooneyes or Sunpro? I think you better check again. The chrome is over plastic. I'd still rather have a true Sun Super Tach ll retro then a Chinese repop.

I've been using the retro Sun tach for almost 2 seasons in the coupe with zero trouble and great looks. I had to modify the mounting bracket to fit the Lime Works column. DSC00991.JPG

  3. I'm talking about the Sunpro Retro Tach that the OP was asking about and pictured in @BAD PENNY post above. It's all metal, no plastic. I wouldn't put a plastic tach in my truck, my friend! I don't know about the Super Tach. It might be plastic.

It doesn't take much work to put a SunPro Retro Tach in an early Sun cup. You know, the one that looks like a 5 gallon bucket. Sun cup.jpg

  9. Hmmm? Did Bosch buy Sunpro?
These are out of stock everywhere under Sunpro name.
The Bosch one looks the same.

Very true, man, those seventies Sun Supertachs would overshoot a MILE. I had one in my sb pinto, used to stun my friends and frighten my enemies by winging the solid lifter 302 to "8500" with no load on it. I figured it was probably overshooting by about 1000 rpm. They were about as accurate as the Roadrunner "postage stamp" tachs. Probably where all these hamb legends about guys running their solid lifter stock rod 283's to 9 grand come form...

Yup, it appears Bosch bought Sunpro. Those sneaky German bastards!

I gifted one to my cousin when he got his '61 unibody on the road a couple years ago. So far so good, no issues - looks the part and reads well. Only gripe is the backlight is sort of an odd green tint on his that looks more modern than the rest of the tach.

I've got one in my 57 chevy pickup, never had issues with it and works great. I think I bought it off ebay a few years ago for just a touch over $100...

    Yes.

Do they still sell them new? I've got a couple in the box sitting on a shelf in the shop.

Just looked and it looks like Bosch still sells them.

I have bought 4 of these for various projects, over the last 5-6 years, and have not had any
issues with them. I would buy again. I use my old, non-working Sun transmitters with them to provide more of a vintage look. Photos of a '62 Nova and a '46 Chev. Bob

A little off topic, but years ago I bought a set of Moon gauges (including 3 5/8 tach) for my 56 Ford pickup project. I bought them right before Moon started having them built "off shore". They were built by Classic Industries right here in the good ol USA.

  25. I did have it set for 8 clyd. I figured the Tach and the Petronics weren't playing nice with each other. The car it was in was sold in 2016.

We have had the Sunpro tach in the Shaker for seven years, no issues in a high vibration environment
