Hey All!! Just replaced speedo cable for TH350/305 and stock '48 speedo. Do I need to lube the shaft? At about 40mph it starts to squeal & jump all over the place?? Any thoughts? Mack Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Yes you should lube the cable.. Might have to remove the speedo and see if it has a small brass plug you can remove and oil the felt pad on the shaft there. Most do.
Someone suggested mixing powdered graphite with rubbing alcohol, and squirting it in with a syringe. Alcohol evaporates and leaves graphite in place.
Guys do not use graphite, it works its way up the cable and will reek havoc on the speedometer. Graphite is a speedo repair shops best friend. Use lithium grease, pull the cable, coat it and feed it back in. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
When I ordered my speedometer cable from Rusty at Speedometer Service he told me to never use graphite. I figure a man that makes his living rebuilding speedometers and making cables know best, only use lithium grease. HRP
