Where is this held? I remember like 50 years ago going to the Frank Maratta autorama in Hartford Connecticut.

 

"Big E" in West Spfld MA the last couple-three years.

Think it was the Old Hartford Armory back in the day when I went a couple times [late 50's-'61]. Went a few years ago when it was in a building just North of Hartford proper off I 91.

Is Frank Maratta still alive and associated with this show or has he passed away and the show continues in honor of him?

I ask because as a kid in the late '50s I recall Mr Maratta's radical '40 Ford or Merc Custom in the "little pages" magazines of the era...i.e. Rod & Custom, Rodding & Restyling etc.
The Custom appeared every year in a changed form.....the more time passed, the more radical it got.

With no disrespect to Mr Maratta as a person, or as a bodyman, in my opinion he was a gawd awful stylist !! That poor car which, as I recall, began life as a sedan and evolved into an unrecognizable amalgam of bizarre modifications.

In spite of our difference in taste in custom styling, I do hope he is alive and well and enjoying life doing as he pleases.

His son Frank now runs the show.

 

That black Lincoln is fantastic. Very subtle mods and quite elegant...IMO! Glad it doesn't have a "for sale" sign on it!

 

I remember going to the show at the Armory in Hartford in the 50s when I was in high school in NYS, over in Rhinebeck. That's back when "angel hair" filled all the cars with no interiors in them! But the show was a big deal for us teens from cow country, got to see cars like we read about in the little magazines.

 

Frank passed in 1980 and his son Frank Jr. has continued putting on the show.
The Maratta 'Mystery' which you refer to started out as a 1940 Mercury 4dr convertible.
How do I know? well I worked for Frank in the early 50's and put in many hours working on the car.
