This spring I will be getting a 37 Plymouth P3 2dr sedan from a good friend. It has a 52 ish Phymouth flathead 6 and the original 3 speed. The current 3 speed has a problem (I don't know what). What years will fit in the 37? Is there an overdrive that will bolt in? Thanks. Carmak Riverside, Iowa
tons of years will work. as far as I know you can use a top loader tower on some of the side trans for floor shift. there is an overdrive and they are fairly reasonable. I sold one on ebay a few years ago for 3oo or so. there is an old guy who specializes in them and sell them rebuilt. do some surfing and you will find him
if you check in on the p15 website theres a guy who did a tech on installing a ranger 5 speed into a 37 I think. pretty simple and readily available
In the 30s a R7 overdrive was an option on higher end Mopars. After WW2 it was replaced with the R10 model. Both work with most Mopar flatheads and both are getting hard to find.
I'd look into retrofitting a modern 5-speed. I have seen kits for '38-up. Not sure what makes the '37 different. I managed to plant a SBC and a 700R4 in a '37 Plymouth, for a customer in Germany, keeping the stock floor and firewall. If there is room enough in there for all that, there is room enough for a modern 5-speed. http://home.comcast.net/~tcbass/t5.html
