Projects My First A, mostly traditional

Well, I've lurkin, learnin and buildin for the past few months. Its my first traditional hot rod. I am shooting for a 60's era. I'm trying to use nothing newer that mid 60's. However, there will be a hyd clutch and the 9" is probably a '70. But being that I've never done this before, I don't have a yard full of parts or the connections. But I believe firmly in making what I have - work - and doing it myself.

Life is getting in the way, so I'm hoping that this thread motivates me.

Modified "A" frame
Dropped "A" Front axle (not aftermarket)
Split "A" front wishbone
Reversed Eye Front "A" spring
F1 front Brakes
Wishboned 35/6 Radius Rods
40 Front spring in the rear
Early Bronco 9"

40 front rims
F1 rear rims
Firestone Bias big/little

Very interesting build.

 

Even though it's just a 283 I wouldn't have so much faith in those rear bones taking much abuse. All their original purpose was is to act as stringers to beef up the torque tube which took all the rotational force, all 85 h.p. worth. You could add struts from the top center of the axle housing to the ends pretty easy and two poly bushings or tie rod ends up front may not be a bad idea too.

 

Your work looks nice and clean! How are the pie-cut front bones working out?

Good looking project, traditionally inspired and no apologies needed for utilizing what you have for the rearend. Very clean looking build so far.

Started the firewall flip yesterday.

 

The way the OP has brought the wishbones together and attached them to a ball is the correct way to run bones with an open drive. Keeping them split with tie rod ends or bushings is wrong and will bind. Adding a strut form the center of the axle to the front near the pivot point would be a good addition.

In my 28 PU, I am running a setup very similar to what the OP has shown. I wish I had added a strut in the center. I did add a plate at the front as well as some gussets right before the axle. It has held up for numerous miles over the past 7 years as well as a few trips down Mokan and I have had no problems. This is with a mild 312 Y-block and a 4 speed. I don't run it real hard, but I don't totally baby it either.

 

X2 !!! those 36 bones will bend for sure under torque
Sure, the OP did the bones in the right pattern with the ball,,,,but without a torque bar or tube you are asking for trouble.
You need a 3rd bar so the axle doesn't twist, that's what a torque tube was for.

 

Well, good thing I have a torque arm.

Anyway..... Back to my build....

Working on the firewall, tunnel and floor. I'll get some pics up in tomorrow.

I spent a day working on the inner fender. A lot of work and I could have bought a panel for $30, but it's just not the same.

Looks great so far! The patch panels on the wheel wells look great as well! How did you end up puttin the bead in?

Just finishing my first gas welding adventure. David Gardiners video motivated me to try it over MIG. Not as easy as he makes it out, but it definitely is easier to planish out the wrinkles.

Maybe he's so busy working on this, that he just don't have time for cyber rodding
Least I hope so, I'd like to see it completed.

Dang. I was looking forward to a 'Happy Ending' with him smoking the tires into the sunset. Oh well. Anyone know any more than is posted? It had all the right stuff by an obviously bright and motivated builder.

 

I'm still here. I've lost some interest in the hamb after they changed the format/layout.

I'm still working on the project but it's moving slow. Most recently I've got some help reinforcing the rear wishbone. I'm starting to plumb it now.
