Measure the bolt pattern, chances are there are dozens of possible choices. I forget if they're big Ford or small Ford pattern.
5 1/2 " on 5 , Ford pickup comes to mind but they used the same pattern on Early Lincolns ,ford pass. till 48 ,mercs till '51 , some Chryslers in 14" ,late Dodge pick ups , lots of choices.
Lincoln are 6 X 5 1/2 I meant late Model Rims, I think that all late model rims are 6" wide or better just my 3.5 cents

Most Ford and Lincoln wheels have a 3.375" center bore, your merc is slightly larger if it's stock and most wheels won't fit.
49-51 Merc and Lincoln rims both have the 5 x 5 1/2 bolt pattern with the large 3 and 5/8 center hole. However, the Merc rims are 15 x 5 1/2 in. wide with a total width of 6 1/2 inches. The Lincolns are 15 x 6 in. wide with a total width of 7 in. I am sure because in this 1970 photo below I was running Merc wheels on the front and Lincoln wheel on the rear. Even had port-a-walls. Older Chrysler Imperials used a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. I have a set of Chrysler Imperial wire wheels on my Model T Touring equipped w/ '40 Ford brakes.
Not sure about the Mercury's but I know that they were the same bolt pattern as the Ford. Here's a set on a bobber that I was building, sold the truck and kept the 16 X 5 wheels.
Be careful with wide wheels in the rear. The mounting flanges for the lower quarter panels take away a lot of space that you thought you had.
Mike, That is an excellent point. It's easy to forget that the actual tire/fender clearance takes place up inside the fender panel where it bolts on. Especially critical if you lower your car.
