Growing up in the southern Illinois area I vary seldom saw a Deuce hiboy roadster, but when I did I knew that was the car I would have to own someday. In high school, I would read all the magazines and sketch out what I would build. I had never seen a real California hiboy until I saw Tom McMullen's flamed beauty parked outside of a bar in Indy. I thought that was the top banana for me. I kept the dream going but college and work prevented me from obtaining the dream hiboy I wanted.

In the 1970's, Lobeck built what I considered to be the best example of what I really wanted and I proceeded to copy the car as close as possible. I had Bill Metz do the QC and chassis just like Barry did and finally, I had my dream roadster. All of the aforementioned roadsters were in different forms during that time and were not my style. Fast forward to to the rising popularity of history cars and all of a sudden they are the ones to duplicate. SO-CAL started another trend with bias tires and racing scheme paint along with high quality restorations of those old examples of a boys dream. I am in love with that look also.

My point is... if you love roadsters you have to consider the McGee and Spencer cars as inspirations for many of us today who remember the cars from our youth. Bruce Meyer thankfully has all of these favorites, including Lobeck's, tucked away in his private collection for us to admire. I don't believe there can be a "Best" selection but most certainly a "Favorite" selection.

Long live the "Hot Rod Roadster".

I really dig this car, something about it sets itself apart from all the rest.

The Simard Duece gets my vote for sure...

  7. Mr. Walsh still has the car and should be racing it every year. He currently lives in Pleasinton. His car was displayed at the Sonoma drrag racing nationals a year ago and there are plenty of youtube videos of the team racing.

So many Deuces................so little time:) Wonder if someone will come up with a truly unique version after all of this time.................one that will be considered "one of the standards" 50-100 years from now?

nothing but attitude....made a big impression on me when I was a kid....still cool as truck to me today...

  14. Phil Cool's '78 AMBR winner.
I'd characterize it a little like Keesler's yellow highboy on steroids.
It got tattooed onto my then-16-year-old brain and hasn't ever faded.

My favorite is Vic Edelbrock's or Veda Orr's. Both fantastic cars!

I didn't know it when I posted it, but the Carls 222 roadster was a B/R Jerry Cogswell ran from 1960-1969 it ran a best of 10.5 @ 130.
This car was fiberglass and was from a mold that Jerry made from a real 32 in 1960. It ran a 375hp 327 with 25% setback. This info came from Jerry himself.

I do think Doane's is the best highboy roadster, but Busby's 5W may be the best coupe:
