When I first started going to custom car shows with Dennis McPhail back in the late 1990's, David Guymon would almost always have some new crazy custom making a debut. And I don't what year it was when I first laid eyes on his '55 Bird, but I distinc...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
The front end on that thing is really tasteful, a very nice job. The tail end is a bit strange, but still nice. actually kinda reserved or mild for the era.
Chaz,i was thinking basically the same thing,,I think Guymon used a little restraint considering the era in which the car was built. HRP
David does not get the recognition he deserves,,He has many outstanding cars to his credit..some magazine cars as well..Jim Bakers 48 Merc was invited to the all Merc show in Calif a few years ago and was a favorite of the Rickster.you may see Jims Merc on Riks website
Guyman certainly took inspiration from Jimmy Jimenez' remarkable, Joe Ortiz built '56 T-Bird, done decades earlier in 1962. Chopped windshield, headrest pods, canted fenders, quad lights, the works! You can see it HERE: http://books.google.com/books?id=Ic...6AEwATgK#v=onepage&q=joe ortiz t-bird&f=false
Great look all around and it takes cajones to customize a car that would be worth more in its stock form.
I am not a fan of a lot of the features on that (headlights for one) but he really pulls that car off. I like it.
I seem to think this cars debute was in the early/mid 90's....I had a picture of it on my wall when i was a kid. where is it now???
Funny, I was thinking just the opposite. Beauty is in the eye..... Still, I would love to have the skills.
I saw this car on a car trailer at a gas station about 15 years ago and talked to the guy who was pulling it, not sure if that was him or not, but I told him I liked it and that it was the first custom T-bird I'd seen, having worked at a T-bird resto shop for a couple years by then. My favorite feature is the headrest pods.
What's not to like? The canted lights definitely work with the fender treatment, the taillights take but a second to get used to and the side profile is sick!! I know I've seen more of his work, but I think I need a little refresher course. Anybody got more pics of his car art? Thanks
I just talked to David on the phone to tell him about this thread...He is not a member here, but told me that anyone can see his cars at Guymons Customs..on Rik Hovings website He will also be at the roundup this year
Is there a technical name for the mod to the smoothed/rolled pan of the lower fender and front? I've always liked that look on some cars.
I first saw that at the KKOA show in Dennison probably around 2000-2001? Love that thing, in my book the best custom t-bird built. At the same show was this '53 Chrysler which I also immediately fell for. There were a bunch of Gary Howard cars there too. One of the first car shows I drove myself to and it was a good one. Really shaped my taste in Kustoms.
The T-Bird and also the Chrysler above was originally built for Wayne Zablonski, from Honey Grove. Texas
