I just skimmed thru the new Hot Rod magazines special edition of the drag cars of the 50's 60's and 70's and there is not one photo,or mentioning of the Mooneyham and Sharp 554 coupe.Sure theyre pics of the cars it beat constantly not to mention it was pretty unstoppable from 60' to 63' even though it raced smaller cars.It was considered the first funnycar,Al even made the aluminum heads for that hemi, probably one of the first to do so in that time...and everything else he made,or all the other cars and racers he helped like Art Chrisman...I dont know it just pisses me off that even when he died last year nothing was mentioned in any magazines. His story and all thats hes done in hotrodding needs to be told,it would be nice if a magazine stepped up to do it...
And will a museum on the west coast step up and buy the coupe out of Don Garlits museum and put it where it belongs, its a shame a west coast car in an east coast museum, besides the lotto aint workin with me..
I still cant find that magazine anywhere in my hometown - that pisses me off! The 554 is one of my all time favorites.
The 554...One of my all time favorites. I would of loved to see that thing blast down the strip. I hate missing out on stuff!!!
I agree with Mutt, you have to read the beginning editors write up, the issue encompases all of the "lost" photos of drag racing's past and tries to provide you with some never before seen stuff. Maybe they don't have any lost photos of that car.
As far as that magazine goes, I don't see anything to complain about. I can't find one thing in that magazine that isn't totally bitchin'. How about just digging what is in there and not whinning about what is not in there? If it pisses you off so much, why not send your copy to levi's classic?
as if you cant get enough of the traditional hotrod/kustom and racing scene in california. i got to see the car in garlits museum, and thought it was awesome. if we had 25% of the cars and culture here as there is out there id be happy. if it pisses you off so bad, fly to garlits and take a peek
Yes, we will reply, but the fact is that action speaks louder than words. Have you sent requests to magazines asking for a write up about your favorite racer or builder? Do like that guy in "The Shawshank Redemption" and send an e-mail a week. How about going to your area tracks and getting a petition or money to get the cars loaned to the west coast. Hell, with all the info available on the net, why not do some research, collect pics and start a blog? I bet if you came up with something good, Ryan would post it on the Jalopy Journal.
Another long dead thread risen from the grave guaranteed to piss someone off,,,after 8 years,,, I'm mad! HRP
Want to know what really burns my ass????..... A flame about ^ that high..... Thanks guys!.. Be sure to tip your waitress on the way out!
It WAS an East Coast car after it stopped being competive out West, sold, and was raced out of Pennsylvania. Bob
Getting back on topic be grateful Don Garlets decided to save all the old drag cars that lost favor and were being lost or cut up. Don Has always been a pioneer and a innovator,,and now a leading historian in preservation. HRP
