The flag hung in Harlem -- from the offices of the NAACP during the 1930s -- whenever news of a lynching was received..

I see a great idea for a Honeymooners prequel episode here - teenaged Ed Norton and Ralph Kramden doing a bucket brigade as the beer comes down :D

"Taken on or about September, 1948 in the original showroom of Dooley Brothers Chevrolet/Oldsmobile in Somerville, New Jersey. On the left, a brand-new 1949 Chevrolet sedan and, on the right, a 1915 Chevrolet Amesbury Special. The second ever Chevrolet dealership in the New York area known then as the Newark zone. Pictured left to right: Harry Dooley III, Harry Dooley Jr., and Harry Dooley (standing next to his brother) Michael Bernard Dooley, Bernard Michael Dooley, and (on the fender) Lawrence Michael Dooley, age almost one. Submitted by the guy on the fender." -- Lawrence Michael Dooley

"My favorite car picture ever. My late grandmother snapped this shot of her two sons - Leww, my uncle, in front, and Lyn, my dad. They were both so proud of their cars - and in their town of 1600 population no one could imagine owning anything other than a Chevy, Plymouth, or Cadillac. "

As long as we're saluting the troops, I'll toss in a few of my dad's photos - he was a weather observer in the Air Force at Itami AFB during the occupation of Japan in 1948. It was peacetime, but they were already having some trouble from the local Communist fringe and he got shot at once (they missed).

IIRC the term originally referred to small sticks used as kindling.

"My father took this picture of my mother and their 1938 Buick, which they affectionately called Mrs. Bruneck. They had only recently wed, and times were tough. My parents always said that the Buick made them feel richer than they really were. They talked about this car well into the 1970s, and I don't think they ever owned a vehicle that they cared about as much--even when times for them got better." -- Joseph Link Location: Lincoln Park, Chicago

My Dad's good friend looked after General McNarney's car in Germany, around 1946. His house is in the background. I think he's the one in the car...

  28. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I got that photo, and I was more amazed at the Cord race car at the time. Damn I hate CRS! "Can't remember stuff"!

Update, I looked back through my browser history and found it again. Here's the whole article from the Nov 1949 Popular Science.
