So a few more details I did before the car went to paint.

The first was mounting the spotlight. The car will just have a single spotlight on the drivers side like a lot of the early customs had. Luckily I have original Appleton patterns for pre-war cars, so that helps with properly mounting the light in the right position. It also helps to have an original drill guide so the drill bit stays strait.

Then I started making the pattern for the rear gravel pan. Normally I would weld and mold this to the car but because the rear fenders wont be molded we cant do that. So it needs to fit really close without touching the body. I didn't get this done so I will need to finish it down at the paint shop.

Single Appleton looks neat, love the fact that you actually have an original guide for the drill bit too. Gravel pan will be a sweet addition too.
What is Adam's expected turnaround on Tim's car?

  6. Love the way this is coming out and the direction it is being taken although old style ideas it is turning out to be a very fresh take on a custom merc!! Thanks for the updates Kevan.

I can't believe that I've never found this thread before. I've always admired your work Sledge and I think this one is going to go down as one of your best efforts. This time around I'm really liking the concept car look as it will make a really nice stocker sitting next look like it has something wrong with it. It would be nice to see a photoshop nose to nose photo or photo collage of both stock and chopped versions when it's done.

hey Nathan, well we're hoping to have the car painted, glass done, and headliner in by the 20th of January. Then I can bring it back home and finish up the small details.

The '39 Merc looks good even just sitting on a trailer. It will be a very cool early custom!

Been watching this thread intently, and I have developed a keen taste for 39,40 Mercs for a while.
I know it's been said and rightfully so you do Killer work Kev!
I love the way this 39 has evolved and it's great to know there are still guys around with the patience to pull off Early Styling like this!!!

Glad I found this Merc thread, jaw dropping awesome. Merc's are where you find them. This neanderthal emerges from his cave (1939 Merc conv) and discovers fire. The yield was some floor pan, header top latch posts, B pillar cast brackets.

Also, was the weatherstrip piece metal or stainless steel (above the door and rear quater window) on this '39? Thanks

Just went through the whole thread.. Speechless!!

Gorgeous car. It's the pre-war style customs that I love seeing because they're not as common as the post-war ones. You knocked it out of the park with this one.
