I am thinking the Miata front suspension now it is about 3 inches wider then the Hillman so I would flair out the wheel well lips to a 70s style race car flair & flat lip. Miata rear suspension with a 7.8 Ford Cougar Thunderbird center section this gives great handling & power disc breaks all 4 corners, with a 289 or 302 Ford motor, Trans still thinking 5 sp or aod. The Miata motors are great but under powered for what I want. The hillman is way under powered 48 hp when new & hillman parts in general are a pain to find. So I figure the Miata suspension will give it great handling & the Ford V8 will give it plenty of go. I want to be able to drive it any where so the more modern running gear will do that. So should I keep posting or not on this.

 

I would be interested in watching the build, anything different always has thing to teach and learn....Jim

 

I'd be interested in watching too, I don't know if it's hamb friendly so if you put a build on another site I'd watch on.
Either way it's an great concept: take a great looking classic add a chassis renowned for handling but lacking in power and inject some hotrod muscle into the whole mix. Sounds a little to much like protouring which may be counter to what is trying to be achieved here on the hamb

 

Well I dont know what pro touring is to be honest. I am almost 65 I dont plan to race it just drive it & want the reliability. I am not into the off shore motors or the high tec electronics fi systems. I am not planing on boat loads of hp maybe 250 to 275 I need it so the other half can hit the key & drive it is just to be a fun cruser. So if is not wanted I wont post it so guys let me know.

 

The best way to frame the whole pro touring trend is guys spending huge money on camaros with ridiculous wheels. But the idea of updating an old car so you can enjoy it more make so much sense to me.

 

Getting the new suspension for the 59 Hillman.







I need to break the rest of the rear apart then power wash both ends.

Well I won't be using the Tbird rear center I just came across a Cadillac CTS-V center section with 10k on it, it will handle 550 hp so my motor running 300 or less will not brake it. The Caddy center was cheaper then buying a ford 8.8 center then doing a rebuild. I am trying to pick the most reliable way to go only want to build it once. More to come.

I was researching the T-Bird rearend and found the Lincoln MK8 has the same rear but aluminum and not cast iron like the T-bird... the Lincoln MK8 also comes with a sweet Teskid Aluminum block 4.6 Liter v8 just put a Mustang cobra forged crank and its capable of handling 500 hp easy...

 

More coming I have a pending deal on a 302 with aod will know Monday for sure trying to build on a tight budget for parts. Plus keeping the health issues under control, thing are tight now but trying to progress slowly a little every few days, progress is progress.

 

Well I did some trading & got the motor & trans for the Hillman/Miata/Ford.







I will be using the 302, the AOD & maybe a few other parts.

Thanks guys it is to be a low budget & horse trade build with work being slow in the shop & having to watch what I do for health reason plus I want this to be a fun & reliable car to drive & that is why the more modern suspension, running gear. You cant find parts for a hillman at your local parts store. I also want something my other half can just hit the key & drive it with out it craping out when she is driving a must in this house. Plus I figure some of the guys across the pond might be intrested.

 

I borrowed a pair of tires form a friend trying to get the stance I want & wheel opening. Dont pay attention to the wheel just the tire Dia & stance.
















The wheel opening's will be reworked some in fresh metal but I like the tire size & look. With a 302 V8 modern suspension it should work pretty well. Any thoughts.

That's going to look good! It looks like its a pretty fun project, figuring how to adapt everything and such.
Does it have a name yet? It almost has to have a name of a venomous snake!

Cadzook yes the shop is open for customer work.

I dug the chassis table out from under all the crud, moved it into place, took the wheels off to have lower work hight then leveled it up. Hope full tomorrow I can pull the motor, trans & pull the interior.





Now let the fun begin.

Removing the interior is next then remove the suspension front & rear. I sold off some extra parts & duplicate equipment so the wheels and tires should be shipped Monday. I am trying to set my self up for most Saturdays for my project days but the rest of July is shot. Yearly family gathering at the sisters cabin my vacation for the year(2 days) 4days in Torrance Cal on Power Hammer training & Goodguys Puyallup, I am a vendor there promoting my work & the sheetmetal tools & equipment I sell. My health is on the slow mend (back & neck herenated disc issues) But yes progress will continue & thanks for the encouragement.
