Worlds fastest Commer...?

Made a steering shaft column out of a table leg...
Ididit... my way!
A hose clamp holds the Ford steering tube in place inside the leg and also works as an attach point for the dash.
The turn signal "thing" is an aftermarket NOS twist button device, wich even have a tab you put on the steering wheel so the "thing" get self retracting!
Some more detailing is still left, like the horn button and the wiring.
By the way, the steering wheel comes from a Fiat 1100 from 1958.

 

Great post, reminds me of a guy I saw make a set of exhausts for a 30's Harley out of art deco table legs that were in his neighbors rubbish pile

Since my shop floor is digged out for some drain work, not very much have happened the last weeks, but I wanted to find out how hard it is to do wood graining on the dash...
It´s damn hard!
It came out looking more than a pile of dry sea weed, than mahogany...
So, what to do?
The same as before... cheat!

I wrapped the dash in some cool foil that you can form with a hair dryer. Wasn't easy either, will redo it, but works for me.

 

Now the shop floor is dry again and the work can continue.
The steering rack is almost done and next part project has started...

Look, I admire the build, but the home made rack and pinion has alarm bells ringing for me. It's a critical component and I would suggest you get one from a mainstream motor manufacturer that has spent millions to ensure it's safety in an automotive environment.

Great so far but a big no-no from me on the Rack. So what was in it when you did the test drive?? Two pieces of string??

Well Mart, thank you for the friendly warning, I totally agree with you, but the two last pictures are not a rack and pinion belonging to the steering.
Sorry if I fooled you, but it belongs to ..."next part project...".
A new crazy idea that also involves a tach and a heater control cable...

This is how it ended up...
The rack is connected to a choke wire. Pull it and the gear spins the tach round into sleeper mode...

Childish? Of course!!!
It's never too late for a happy childhood.

Now that is cool! Just think of the effect it'd have at a stop light with someone is trying to get you to race. He sees that tach pop up and says "Oh shit...".

 

Floor is ready with the two inspection hatches in the middle, dash rebuild from 8 fastening bolts to 2, a 2,5" exhaust pipe converted to.. an umbrella compartment!

Been busy with all those 1000 small things that never shows, but have to be attended to.
Like the hood... didn't fit at all, anywhere... old english bolts with Withwort threads... etc.
