This! The world doesn't need another 1980s-90s 302 in a shoebox. If you had a shoebox in the late 50s with a Lincoln 368 in it you'd have been one of the cool kids.
i would run a 302 with a nice cam and some heads and a AOD trans. and youll be fine. am running a 302 with a c4 and i love it but later want to put a AOD get that overdrive...... keeping it ford is cool thow... hate that 350 chevy motor in a ford..hahaha
In the late '50s if you had a 368 Lincoln in anything you would have been one of the cool kids. That is one of the most unobtainable engines I have ever sought after. Funny how some carrots just stay right beyond the end of you nose.
Best looking one i've seen was a Black 'box with a Tbird dressed y block and a Paxton. I'll prob do a SBF/T5 dressed like a 260.
How about a 347, a stroked 302, with an AOD behind it. Good bottom end, and with the AOD, overdrive to help with gas mileage while crusin'.
What he said..any Windsor if you want fairly cheap and easy. I've been wanting to put a 5 speed-347 or 427 in my 40 Merc for a while.
Oh tell me about it. I spent all of last summer trying to buy a 56 Lincoln! And one of these days I'm gonna put a 368 in my 54 Ford. With tri power. And continental aluminum valve covers. Maybe then I'll be one of them cool kids
got to though my 2c i have in my hands most of those motor and in my 54 i am putting in a dohc 4.6 old scool style(log man. multi carb and dizzy)should have all the above and the big wow factor too. if i didnt have the 4.6 i would prob go with the y block hard to got parts but the cool factor is there
Hell even the 272 could be made pretty snappy and I think I know where there is one for sale. I don't have a clue where Slayer is but I'll bet this fella would be more than happy to unload this one. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=676160
Hey guys, i have a yblock that is sitting in the shop. Would like to supercharge it. Read about a charger that was made back when then paxton bought the company. I have a read a little on boosting yblocks. Some say not a good idea while others say yes. (like anything I suppose) Thought about a 302 and stroking it as well.
Maybe boosting is not a good diea of you plan on throwing 14 or 15 psi at it. The Y-Block has a very strong lower end. Build the engine like you plan on huffing it and you will be fine.
Be Careful Building A Small Block Ford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my opinion, if period correct is not high on the list but size and reliability are, go 351w. Toploader??? You will find there are a lot of quirks and things that will piss you off when trying to round up parts for 302 / 289. About the same size but the 351 deck is a tad taller, heads are better and distributor is in the front. If there was a good flathead within 400 miles of me it would be my choice, but thats just me. And manual trans only. If you go windsor, try to get one that is mostly complete. Ford really made it hard.
351W with a 427 stroker kit - BBF power, SBF weight. Back that puppy up with a Tremmec TKO 600. Your car will run 11s all day long!!!(or fry the tires mercilessly trying) ;^)
Any Ford engine except a 429-460 or a 351-400m. Those engines just don't look right to me in old cars. JMHO. i RAN 429-460'S in my 69 Mustang drag car and never really did think it looked right.
289/302/351W, but get the '66-'72 Bronco oil pan and oil pickup tube, that way there will be minimal fitment issues.
" i would prob go with the y block hard to got parts but the cool factor is there" Y-Block parts are easy to find. Offy still makes 3x2 intakes,John Mummert has a single quad intate that beats every other intake else when it comes to making power, plus he grinds and sells some really good y-block cams. Somebody is repopping the finned t-bird valve covers, and you can get stock engine parts pretty much anywhere you go,including Advance Auto. Just tell them you have a 61 Ford pu. Here is the mid-atlantic states there were more y-blocks put into 40's and 50's Fords than anything else going. The Olds 303-324 did come in a strong second, though.
300 inch six with triple Carters and split manifolds. Gear it 2:40-ish - 1 and groove the roll-on performance. Cosmo
Im currently putting a '64 289 (being built as a hipo 289) in a 49 coupe mated to the original OD tranny. Its simple and not a lot of money tied up in it. I also have a 302/C4 combo in a '55 ford that i have driven for 20yrs and many many miles with no issues.
I am running a 302 with flat top pistons and a mild cam backed it with a AOD. I love it. 70mph on the freeway at 2500 rpm.
