Ron you do have some of the coolest Hot Rod photography ever seen! Ron's house is like a cool Hot Rod and Kustom Museum too! I can and have spent hours there..lol..
Could we come up with a better term than "period correct?" It's too much like "politically correct." Maybe "period perfect." ;-)
I would hate to see that change. The semanticist in me feels there's a huge difference between "period correct" and "period perfect". The former implies an acceptance of might-have-been builds using parts commonly available in the era, while the latter would seem to require a restoration-like focus on being able to document that a particular combination of parts was actually used by somebody in the era. -Dave
damn guys, talk about being picky...im with you on that period correct versus period perfect, but I would say that would be for current builds if anything...i don't know, if you get down to the nitty gritty there would have to be a thread just for each... but hell, I think we are all having fun with this thread and think the same, when it comes down to it, that these pictures are way cool! even if its an original photo shot in the 40's or if its someones vision of something damn near close... I have to say that its amazing what everyone here has brought to the table lets keep that going! so period correct or period perfect, this thread is just awesome...period!
R&C Ron, awesome pics!! These were taken out at the Reno dry lakes sometime around the late 1940's to early 1953ish at the very latest before they quit running out there and organized a drag strip in the Reno area (Minden airport). A couple of my close friends ran out there in 1946 before it became organized by the Cal Neva timing association shortly thereafter, and I have over 100 scanned images that include other shots of these cars but at different angles. I also just scanned another old racer's scrapbook from SF (Ramblers) and he ran out here too in 1950-51, and that is another 180 images. When I was out there with my roadster, I have a similar shot of the mountains, and nothing much has changed in all these years. The course is short, but it is still really hard, and is open to the public still, but mostly wind kart gliders and r/c airplane guys use it. It would be awesome to run out here again! 1950... And now in 2011.... Original Rambling Rods patch, Reno's first hot rod club right at home!
Sinister Speed......Thanks so much for the info on the Dry Lakes photos .I was not even aware of a Dry Lake in Reno , I always assumed these photos were from So-Cal. I love the patch and your Roadster is Bitchen!!!!!
This thread is a great reference. Well done. Here's an RPU that I'm building. I'm keeping it pretty sympathetic to the feel of a 40's cut-down because it's cheap. The alternator has to be hidden or swapped out for a generator when I find a 12v one with a cut-out on top.. I don't wan't a regulator sitting on the firewall. It'll probably end up with twin updraft tillotsons and a head and a torque-tube header. I have some 46 steelies to go on next.
erlomd, Uber-Kool Thread ! Thanks for starting it. Love them olde pix !! Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net
G'day Ed , Nice to see the rpu with the windshield on ,that car is a blast. Little miss Eva really enjoyed the drive the other day ,she wants one of her own ! Cheers Rene
thanks but it would be nothing without the sensational pics everyone has shared...i can't thank you all enough
Here is one of my first ones, about 1954 it has a 261 chev 6 out of one of my Dads trucks. My first was a 1941 chev that I made 3 carb intake and dual exhaust for. It had the 216 engine. That was 1952.
