misspelled hubcap stamps

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Low Down Lincoln, May 23, 2011.

  1. Hey guys I have looked all over and can't seem to find anything to do with this issue. They look to be at least an old reproduction if not original stampings. I knew if anyone could help it would be you guys here is a pic. Just curious and looking for any info.

I've seen a bunch of them done that way. I'm sure they were aftermarket years ago & were looking for a way around the legal deal. Mis-spell it & you are not stealing...right???

PEP boys used to sell a lot of hubcaps like that. They did it to avoid having to pay license fees to the holder of the trademark.

I have seen this before on a 1952 Buick mustache where Buick was spelled incorrectly. From what I understand the company making the parts did not have the ok from the manufacture, by misspelling the name they were able to produce the parts without any issues.

EDIT Wow you guys are quick!

The last hubcaps made with those "faked" logos came from Argentina in the 60s-70s. Domestic USA production of such things likely ended with the early 60s as the large accessory and replacement part manufacturing companies foundered.
This "50-ft" look type of hubcaps were made also in the 30s-40s-50s, another example being the "Bool" etc. Model A Ford replacement caps.

  6. Thats what I figured no copyright issues then. The only thing that made me a little more curious is that they are chromed and not stainless which I though most repro's were stainless. I really appreciate the quick answers guys thanks, I knew I could count on the HAMB.

I've seen 40 Ford style caps with "THE DELUXE" on them instead of FORD DELUXE.

I have a full set of 1949-1950 Chevy caps with a dash instead of the bowtie.

a buddy of mine sold a set of 1930-ish Chevrolet caps with the dash rather than a bowtie on ebay and got a negative feedback because there was no bowtie. guess the buyer was too stupid to look at the pictures.

I used to see NOS 47-48 Ford caps with just rectangles instead of actual FORD block letters when I first started hunting for parts back in the dark ages. They were the Argentinian repops I thought that they were stupid then. Now I think that they would be cool.

I found one once that said "dodoe" instead of "dodge"...you know, the ones that were all block-style lowercase letters.

I usta have a set of early repro '42 Ford caps that had a french curve shape instead of the scripted Ford. Just like the ones shown on the Reg Schlemmer roadster (car on the first cover of Hot Rod Magazine) in the close-up pic in the Genat book. Got big money for them and they went to Europe. Never seen another set since.

I frequently spot singles/pairs of beat up hubcaps with the row of squares on them instead of the correct name. But never a full set. Always think it would be neat to run them, but figure I'd never find the last one to that set.

I have a 30-31 A Ford cap that says Fool. It's a saver and a good wall hanger. Wish I had a set of 4.

Hmmm?? I'm still looking for some
    ultra-rare '34 Henway wire-wheel
    center caps that were mis-stamped
at the factory with an upside-down
"N"! It's impossible to tell by looking
at them, but there's a rumour that in
addition to the "N", these center
caps may have also even had the "H"
    stamped upside-down on them too!
Anyway, only three of these mis-stamped
    "upside-down N" center caps were
produced before the press operator who
made them. a known and notorious
    recalcitrant and malcontent, was
    found-out and summarily executed by
    plant security, instantly making both
him and the caps beyond rare! And
now too, 76 years after the fact, these
    mis-stamped caps are the absolute
    "Holy Grail" for Henway aficionados
and collectors. Of the three made, I
now own four of them, but my latest
    acquisition and restoration project
    - a one-off, 1934 Henway triple-cowl
    armoured limousine, originally built
for 'Her Royal Highness, Queen Nookie
III', the last Sultaness of Listeria - has
dual sidemounts....so now I need two
    more!!!:eek::eek::D

  20. Wow Mart, so you have 4 out of 3 made and your looking for 2 more?

I've heard 5 out of 4 people have trouble with fractions! haha

Looks like you'll really score when you find 2 more. That's neat and good luck with the project.

I've also heard that there are three types of people in the world; those who are good with numbers and those who are not.

Never heard of any of this! So cool, thanks for the lesson. Pretty funny that companies did that... I'd love to find a "FOOL" hubcap!
