Driver Dale Emery almost drowned in the Fremont "pond". Track officials and fellow racers jumped in and turned the car right side up allowing him to escape

Thanks, I could not place it either.

  9. For me, it's just classic Pomona. The guys hanging out the window of the old packing house make the shot perfect. I saw that same scene on many a Sunday afternoon.

  11. Says picture thread, therefore hoping these pixels don't offend ..
Pirotta/ Caruana, keeping them honest in Comp Eliminator, early eighties winter open, Adelaide. Car started out in A/G in '68?-69. As depicted here, with Ford 'Cammer in AA/G.
It did run with the lights on. Seem to recall hearing it still was an all- steel acid-dipped body at this stage of development ( it then was a mid to low-ish eights car).
Great news is she's still up & about with 'Cammer power.

This guy,George Shumpert(spell) did a show at South Glens Falls with a conventional wheelstander.I remember talking to him and telling me"people call me Shump" in a Southern gentlemanly way.Said he was working on a truck with bars so he can roll it 360.Damned if he didn't do it.

    Spog,
I was probably standing somewhere behind the car at the time and remember those days fondly

  19. My friend Paul Burns at the wheel who along with the late Bill Doane ran the Spirit Of 76 from Marblehead, Mass. I didn't see this one in person as I was in Viet Nam.

I'm pretty sure this deal finished off the chassis...

I know I have provided this story before, but we (my Dad & Mom who were the operators of our drag strip, Muncie Dragway) booked this wild thing called the "Back Up Pickup" which basically did the same thing-did a 1/8 wheelstand, hit the brakes and them would roll over through the lights.

Well.... we hired this clown and when he hit the brakes, the damn thing went off the track and actually rolled through our timimg booth at the top end. The good news is that he was okay! Bad news was that thing was TOAST!!!!

I was there once. I was what...5 maybe? And all I can recall was that it was pizza oven hot that day. My uncle had a friend from his work who was running a inj gas rail that afternoon. The day stood as my first intro into the world of drag racing

San Gabriel was my first drag strip, too....sometime in the late 50's.
I was about 8 or 9 I guess. My Dad took my down to the finish line to watch and I sat on a cactus. No shit.
My dad had to pull about 30 of those spiny buggers out of my Levis before we could continue to watch the races.
He and I laughed about that day for many years to come.
