That's really tough. Is it going to visible, or under your hood? These have never been one of Detroit's design strengths,so there just aren't any cool NOS ones. I think most of the a-traditional ones I have seen-canteens, beercans, mortar shells, oilcans, etc look pretty rat-roddy-but that's just my opnion, and what the hell do I know? You can see mine on my Model A,so I chose one of the "traditional" polished aluminum cylinders. Not very original, but it doesn't detract from the overall look of the car. I will be interested to see what you choose.
I am using a vintage brass fire extinguisher on my model A . Hoping it dosen't give a R-R- look to it . Will edit my post with a pic when I get home from work ( is 1pm here at present) . Edit , here's a pic of one the same as what I am using. Couple straps and it tucks in beside the grill shell nice and neatly.
Looking for great ideas and where to purchase a unique item or build No bottles ,I might be able to hide Im not sure yet in the process of mounting shell and fanshroud now along with trans cooler ,Open hood car ,Need some ideas .dont want the rat r d look .So far the extinguisher is a possibility
he said he doesn't want a bottle...I would look into a vintage can that suits your dimensional requirements. eRape has a sh!tload of vintage cans from every conceivable product and you can often find them for under $30 in good shape. Then, you get the can, punch an appropriate hole in the cap for the overflow line and add a vent hole on the top of the can somewhere. Down the road you go. ...my $0.02.
Here's mine. It's a piece of aluminum conduit with ends I made welded in and then finished in the lathe. Painted black so it isn't too street roddy.
A few years ago I made a kind of slick looking overflow can for a buddy's drag car using an old aluminum army canteen. I mounted the canteen 'upside-down' so that 'cap end' faced down. Being aluminum, the canteen could be tig-welded, so I made a mounting bracket for it out of piece of scrap 3/16 aluminum plate welded to the side of the canteen. To connect it to the rad, I drilled a hole into the "top" (of the now upside-down) canteen and welded in a small (dash-2 or dash-3), aluminum '90-degree' AN fitting that connected to a similar-sized AN 'straight' fitting that I expoxied into the brass radiator neck and connected with a length of braided line. there is a post on here somewhere that shows an old cannister type oil filter used as a coolant overflow tank, looked great.
What about a motorcycle oil tank? There's a lot of different designs but I always liked these back in my chopper days.
I may get flamed for it, but I think this is kinda cool. It might be a little too big http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001D1R1SY/ref=nosim/thisnext-20
I just use an old 50's 32 oz glass soda bottle and made a simple little metal bracket to hold it. Since it is glass, it is easy to see how full it is and then when I want, I just pull the hose out of the top pull the bottle out and dump it back in the radiator and replace, very easy and simple.
i uses an old all metal castrol motor oil quart can as an over flow i have another on if you want one
This a "street rod" style aluminum overflow with a twist, our local powdercoat guy, Wes at Supeior Powder Coat, has a coating that looks like copper and it looks old timey and matches my underhood metallic colors. Just an idea that could be coated in other colors or textures and hard to deny the easy mounting of these units.
------------------------- Hey....very nice looking shroud on that rad too! Very slick! mart3406 =========================
hmm the non r.r. approach gas tank from a back pack vintage gas powered leaf blower its a tall curved tank kinda like that big flask shown check some bigger mowers or tractor tanks too use the resivior from a late fifties ford 58-60 vettes used em too .. as the radiator was lower than the resv. tank cap all metal thermos new -vintage plaid old turpintine can or simular modern over flow tank tightly wrapped with canvas, leather ,old cycle inner tube.. its done just modern ugly glass rolling pin.. see gramma's kitchen old bicycle pump brass -painted old insect sprayer home made out of any type of tubing brass , square , aviation strut.. go to the scrap pile or recycling dont forget the right cap ifn you are doing a closed system
If you have a coolant recovery system the overflow can works great. If you don't have a coolant recovery system the shutoff valve on the can will allow you to dump the extra coolant where you chose.
What GUITAR MAN said. I used a poly oil tank from a Suzuki Moped Fit like Factory. painted it black...blends right in with the frame, etc. Opening for the tube is right at the bottom. Unless you're looking for it, it's hardly noticeable...
My '31 use a polished "Asahi" beer can. My '51 has a front mounted "Moon" tank which I use as an overflow.
i still havent delt with this issue.. i want to hide mine..possibly under the radiator..i got some room , its just finding a small tank that will fit. i hate looking at them..they are so ugly
