getting ready to finish up the pickup box I built and build the hidden latch and fit the rear roll pan on my 54F100 project. This is last winters picture I am thinking of ordering Briz 5 rib bumpers for the front and back. How does the traditional hotrod / custom fell about these bumpers. Does anybody have a better idea. I'm trying to get this truck done this summer and don't want to invent a whole lot more. thank you jim h
not very traditional...a bit more street rod....I don't understand why the roll pan if you want a bumper...won't it cover the plate??
There will be about 6" between the bottom of the tailgate to the top of the lisc plate. I also have to mount the latching mechanism for the tail gate in this area and the bumper needs to hide the handle. Also the rollpan hides the receiver hitch and plug behind the lisc plate which move to allow thw use of the hitch to pull the travel trailer. I slightly feel the same way about the Briz bumpers being srteetrodish but would like other people ideas on Briz bumpers or ideas fir a bumper. jim h
Briz bumpers look 1980's-ish to me, but that's just my perception. I do like your idea of a rolled pan beneath a bumper for the truck though. I think the truck would look nice with a pair of 46-48 Ford car bumpers on it. The stock Ford truck bumpers look too homemade to me.
Since you asked, I'm not a fan of Briz either. I know where your coming from though, I've been tempted to use them in the past as a cheap quick alternative, but in the end, that's just what they look like.
I thought I'd like Briz bumpers until I started seeing them installed..Just another worthless opinion,but I've never seen them look good on anything.
Briz bumpers are a repoduction of 39 Desoto or similar , so not 80's ish, I like them ,cost me an arm a half a leg ,but it was worth it The number surround is Briz , 49 Chev style, can be mounted both ways.
I went through the LMC catalogs online and looked at early Ford and Chevy Bumpers and the best fit will be the early Bronco bumpers. So thanks for you input and ideas. Jim H
The Briz bumper is a reproduction and customization of the one-year-only 37 DeSoto ribbed bumper. 49 Plymouth three-ribbed bumpers were quite popular on pickups and 49-54 cars.
You are right about the Briz bumpers being repops of the old Desoto bumpers. A few guys used them back in the 50s on Chevys, Fords etc... for that custom look. To say it's 80ish goes to show there are a lot of "Chumlees" out there.
I say for older cars, like 30's, sure. Not for 50's cars... I gave mine away for a 6 pack of hard cider:
I admit they don't look too bad in Rik's pics,but in real life,that'd be the first thing I'd notice if I walked up to these cars...Maybe if they were chrome they'd look better
At the time, early 90's, I thought this was a good alternative to silver painted rusty stockers. I still like them, I only dislike the annual buffing. Briz will custom bend, contour, and any lenght for you also. I think they are extrusions that they have in straight sticks. And I agree, not right for every car. That's up to you.
If they are used like a DeSoto bumper would be used, (like in Rickster's post) They look okay, but still look like aluminum, which DeSotos were not. If they are made to wraparound a particular car, they are an obvious modern invention. Even if it looks nice to some, it does to me have a hi-tech look. To each his own, but that's my snobby 2cents. I basically like repro stuff only if it can reasonably pass for the gennie, at a glance at least.
They always reminded me of Corrugated tin roof sheeting, or guard rails. Neither of which I find very appealing... They look o.k., in the couple pics above, but...those are REALLY nice cars...it would be hard for a fairly plain ( other than the ribs...) bumper to all out "ruin" them. I think they would certainly look better with something less industrial looking, though... They may be a repop of a one year bumper, but, I don't love 'em... It doesn't "ruin" a car, but...
i like the narrow ones had a pair on my 35 master they are easy to form dont like the large ones looks like if u used two it would look like a wrecker
They are copies of '49 Plymouth bumpers which wrap around. Well polished they are a good standin for the real things.
They are NOT copies of 1949 Plymouth bumpers! Those look completely different! But they are made to "look" like 1937 DeSoto bumpers ... as stated before in this thread! Below are 1949 Plymouth Bumpers on a 1940 Ford And these are 1937 DeSoto Bumpers! These are Briz bumpers on a 1940 Ford
