Customs 1949 Thunderturd.

NEW PROJECT. MAKE THE CAR THAT HENRY FORD II SHOULD HAVE MADE WITH THE RELEASE OF THE 1949 FORD.
THIS VEHICLE IS THE BRAINCHILD Of (HAMBER - MARSHALLAL) MARSHALL CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT, DREW THE RENDERINGS, PURCHASED A 1949 FORD 4 DOOR SEDAN AND DID ALL OF THE FABRICATION (TO DATE). MARSHALL IS A TRUE OLD SCHOOL CUSTOMIZER. I WOULD BE REMIS IF I DIDN’T GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.
MY PLAN IS TO TAKE MARSHALL’S DREAM AND MAKE IT A FINISHED REALITY.
FIRST STAGE : COMPLETE ALL BODYWORK. GET HER RUNNING. SHOW HER OFF AS A ROUGH BUILD. SECOND STAGE : BLOW HER APART AND FINISH HER TO A SHOW QUALITY FULL HOUSE CUSTOM.

Stay tuned. This project will not begin until I clear out
a couple of currently in process projects.

When I saw the title I thought we were gonna see one of those plastic clip deals glued onto a late model. I see a lot of potential here. Y-block and a port hole? Keep the pix coming! Subscribed

Thats very cool and a great idea. Have you ever seen the French Ford Comete, that also came out around 1949? The proportions are very similar to what you have there.

The Comete body was made by Jean Daninos of Facel metal stamping (later they built their own cars as the Facel Vega) who also made bodies for Delahaye, Panhard and Simca as well as several of the French Ford bodies of the 1950s. Beautiful stuff....

 

From people I interviewed for my first T-bird history book, the Comete was studied by Ford's designers when conceptual work was started on the T-bird in '52-'53, and at one time Ford considered bringing it to the US but scrapped the idea - why I don't remember. Plus Ford's engineering staff cut down a '53 more-door to simulate the shorter wheelbase for the 'Bird for evaluation of chassis components. So a melding of these with a '49 isn't too far off base, but I'm more of a fan of keeping the shoebox's front hood/rear deck proportions and using the Comete roofline. Sectioning the body a few inches, though, does help it lose a bit of bulk.

Interesting idea. Billy F. Gibbons Copperhed might also provide some inspiration. I think you need to move the rear wheel back a few inches. Maybe that was in the plans because the concept dwg. has it back a little more.

 

the Comete used a aluminium 4spd gearbox behind the
flathead that was popular to use in hotrods in sweden
same gearbox was used in the facels with manual gearbox

I'm glad you picked this up and are running with the ball on it now!

I was lookin at it before the holidays, but couldn't make the math work with purchase & shipping out to California given the cost of diesel.

I kinda saw a french-like vibe to the coachwork, kinda post war Chapron, softer lines, smaller bumpers and overriders & not the schewbaux grille or headlamps, maybe even a Delehaye-like grille! A nice lether interior with faux woodgrained dash and garnish mouldings. Maybe a '40-'48 Ford facebar front and rear to releave the heavy oem schewbaux vibe.

That French 4 speed transmission they're talkin' about, the Pont a' Mousson used in Facels & early Chrysler 300s is big bucks today.

Check out page 247 of George Dammann's book. 90 Years of Ford.
Briggs Cunningham built a 2 seater 49 Ford from a new 49 Ford ,in 1949.
Also a clear Plexi-top that was removable for the convert., was offered
throught Ford dealers in 1949,made by the Cadillac Plastic Co of Detroit.

Man, that is looking cool, very nice really. That has got a real good chance of being a hell of nice shoebox when done. Definitely an improvement on a standard shoebox and I'm tending to think better than a standard Thunderbird too. I was never really much into the Thunderbirds, but this car is looking damn nice to me.

 

This is so great. My old man and I have always wanted to do a what-if '58 t-bird two seater, this is way more awesome. Keep up the momentum. Rock on!
