Ok its MY Birthday!!! THE BIG 40 !!! The wife and my kids gave me the Book. Yea the book "The Key To Metal Bumping". And it is every bit the informational book people said it was. Eatwood had it on sale!!! Look Out Dents here I come!!!
A great gift a good referance book when you have tried everthing else that won't work start back at the fundementals. Enjoy it
Very nice!!! I never could figure out metal bumping... then I got a shrinking disk and it all made sense!
Now, combine that book with an introduction on Metalmeet.com you will have a whole different out look on what is possibile in a small home shop! Good luck on the metal work. Dan Stevens dba, Steelsmith
exactly that is a very informative site, and happy birthday to the bumper metal guy going for it, he he he
I have been begging my wife for this book. Can somebody explain to me how a shrinking disk works? Also Once I get it what is a decent set of hammers and dollies? I am going to be working on my 1956 ford f100 come spring
Happy Birthday, i'm well past my 40th but recall it well. It was brutal! Great book, one that i've read more than once.
The shrinking disc is a friction tool. It creates heat by spinning on the surface of the metal. You can shrink high spots, highlite low spots, make reverse shapes by shrinking where you want a valley etc. I show the tool in use on my youtube videos below. John www.ghiaspecialties.com
a shrinking disc not always been around.i only discovered it 3 yrs ago since moving to the States and ive been in the trade for 19 yrs now. I learnt shrinking metal the old fashioned way of using an oxy acet torch, spot heating the area to cherry red then using an aluminium hammer (alum doesn't stretch the the steel when hammered)and a hand weight to hammer around the 'cherry red hot spot' in a clock or anti clock wise motion.then cool with water or air. that taught me more of the principals and involved more of a skill process.the shrinking disc is a great tool ,and is great for 'light highs 'in your panels.
Will a metal shrinking disc work on a dent? I have a 56 F100 that has a couple of shots on the roof that need to be worked. They are "innies"(low spots) dents. I just watched this video on youtube and was curious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8cruauERmI&feature=related
You must bump the dents out and smooth them with a hammer and dolly first. The videos in my signature line go into far more detail than the video you posted. Check out parts 1, and 8-12 of Custom Metal Bodywork. John www.ghiaspecialties.com
John, Thanks so much. I am a novice. But I want to try it at least. IF I get in a jam I will haul it up to Earl Scheib, who is a Hamber, his shop is about 40 miles from me here. I appreciate the tips and have a Happy New Year.
