I love this team green, and I was never a green race car guy! Old school, I suppose, afterall, green is the color of food gone bad! (Just kidding) Here's a fictional model car I built, inspired by Team Green!

49 Mercury, big block Ford, chevy chassis

Got some more of Wayne Doebling's stuff scanned. This is from the day I decided that in the future I would always let my own conscience guide me when it came to throwing the yellow flag, rather than instructions from the tower. In the first Salem 500 run by ARCA, I believe 1969, Jerry Norris of Louisville (20) spun on the backstretch and left his car parked up against the inside rail. He was behind the tower where my vision was blocked. An ARCA official in the tower saw me getting ready to throw the yellow and shook his head, waved his arms, and said everything was OK. It was until about 100 laps later, when a mechanic, relieving Benny Parsons in the 98, spun coming off the second turn and crashed into Norris' car. Jerry was understandably upset, and came to me after the race. I sent him to the ARCA official who had signalled me, and to my surprise the guy owned up to it. From that point on, I adopted a policy that I'd rather throw a yellow too quick than to throw one too late.

Not sure where, but the date stamp says 1970. I suspect Tri-County...

This is obviously Salem, and Wayne's date stamp says Oct. 15, 1972. Still waiting for confirmation from Steve Stubbs, my unofficial historian, but I think this is the start of the first ASA Circuit of Champions race, the Midwest 300 won by Darrell Waltrip.

Nice to see that car is still around and still racing. Thanks.

Got a message from Steve Stubbs pointing out that the first ASA Midwest 300 at Salem was scheduled for November 28/29, and rescheduled for the first weekend in November when two cars took out about 200 feet of guardrail during practice. We had 105 cars on hand when that happened, and "only" 93 came back the next week.

That means the photo above was probably an ARCA race, possibly the Salem 500 for that year.

We're certain that the car on the pole of the Salem photo is John Sommerville, not sure if he was behind the wheel. Ron Hutcherson won the event, which we think is inside second row. The car in the inside 4th row looks like Dave Dayton and the 5th row inside looks like a Javelin, which would be Bill Clemmons. 2nd row outside we believe is Ramo Stott.
