Howdy Folks, I've been contemplating the idea of having either a 292 or 350 in my 50 Chevy Truck. I'm mainly going to be using the truck to cruise around, tow a boat, and occasionally stomp on the gas. I like the look and ease of the straight 6 so I was originally inclined to go that route. I have been doing some research and from what I've gathered its cheaper to go the 350 route and I might get better MPG as well. I just wanted to get some input here so please offer your .02 I may be fine to go with at least 16 MPG but no less then that...even that is pushing it. Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
Put the 292 in it, I just want to puke very time a hood is opened & theres a small block Chevy in there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331800 get some motor mount ideas here & think how much better this car looks with the 6 in it
I've got a friend with a '51 studebaker starlight coupe. He pulled the flathead six and put in a chevy V6. Its a KOOL setup. Fits the space, great performance, sounds great and gets 20 MPG.
The nephew and I just finished a 350 V-8 conversion in a 51 Chevrolet Business Coupe. Originally, I wanted to go with a 250 six cylinder. Now that the conversion is done with all new powertrain, mild 350, built Glide, 56 rear with 4.88 Positraction, I wish I would have stuck with the 250 six idea. You know, they are'nt making these 6 cylinders any more, better get one while you still can. Ha, ha. Go with the six! Butch/56sedandelivery.
Well if you want to drive around like a grandpa go with the six<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> I cannot stand no power.<o></o> The answer is the dollar, you need someone to bid on Co-parts for a rollover for about $2000 - never v8 maybe corvette - pull the entire drive train out including the electronics and your in - mileage power ratios the whole nine yards and you will not be disappointed on how well it will increase the value of your rig.<o></o> Then slam it
292. Easy to tune to 18 mpg with one Rochester monojet. I have a 250 in my custom pickup with 2 Rochester Potbellies, gets 17-20 highway.
I am putting a V8 in mine. If you do that you will need to change the steering gear box. The old one will be in the way. Check out the pics in my profile.
go with what works for u. I like the 6 idea for ease. I have a 350 in my 31 with 2.73 gears and am getting over 16 mpg and can still put u back in the seat.
Ya guys think I can get away with the stock front suspension with drop spindles or do I really need to go MII or S10 swap?
I have a 1953 3100 about 12 years ago I thought I needed a little more power so I contacted a guy in casa grande AZ. He got me the right parts and now I zip around. The 235 is a great motor, full oil pressure. Dual carbs with a 3/4 race cam, change the rear gear to 3.55 and add a 4 speed. Don't for get top breath Dual exhaust with fenton headers. I still have my generator. am/fm cass. the truck is fantastic. You will love it.
I'll second the Atlas LL8 thought. Been toying with the idea of one of those for my '50 sedan project. 275 - 290 HP, 275 lbs. torque ... I could live with that! There is a youtube video of one of those engines in a drag car, but I can't find it right now.(Not enough coffee yet!) Here's one in an AD pickup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYnuul8rhVo&NR=1
WOW, I had stumbled across a supercharged 6 on a GMC truck on youtube. I wonder where he got that set up from??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVP0B48Od9o Do most superchargers make that whistling noise?
