I've seen some 60s customs with wild, funky center consoles. Maybe even some famous cars (by Alexander Bros., maybe?). But I'll be damned if I can find any good photos for inspiration now that I'm actually considering building one for my 60 Buick. Anyone have photos of wild 60's style custom center consoles??? Tips on where to go for some guidance? I'm having angel hair covered dreams of my future interior. Appreciate the help. Mucho Gracias- Rob Napp 'Nappy'
Gotta have high tech electronics in there--little TV, reel tape recorder, a telephone. Controls should be slightly bizarre, like a butterfly steering wheel on an Impala that requires six turns of the steering wheel to change lanes... I'm remembering all the gadgets that the Kustom Konsultants put into the AMT kits of the day.
I think r&c or (dare i say street rodder ) had an article about building custom consoles. ill see if i could find it and scan it for you. -John
ever see the interior of the chrysler turbine car? pure inspiration... http://www.turbinecar.com/images/4-12-2005/DSCF0070.JPG
Have you checked out Rikster's photo page? He's got a great section on the A-Brothers http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_car_photos/beautiful_custom_cars/alexander_brothers/ with a few shots of some consoles... (among everything else!) Prior to selling it, I had plans for a '60 Chevy... was going to cut out the damaged dash, and build a new one using a large diameter tube as the basis, and adapt bullet-shaped housings for the gauges, and follow that up with a floating center console that cust through the front seat-back, and hovered over the bottom, terminating just before the rear seat-back.... Dreams of old AMT model kits.... Rough sketch of that idea attached...
Several of the early '60's Spotlite books focus on customs, with one on interiors alone. You need those, as well as some olde Car Crafts and R&C's for your research.
This car was at the Choppers show in Cleveland over the winter. It had a super crazy interior...maybe someone else has more pics? It even had two under the counter kitchen lights for interior lights!
it would be cool if pushbutton phones were from back then, you could convert to use the buttons to raise and lower your car if you had airride. (1 - left side up, 7 - left side down, 3 - left side up, 9 left side down or wired to operate power windows...)
You could also hook up an old style telephone handset to work with your cell phone. Pokia/Hulger is one of the slicker companies, but there are plenty of instructions on the web if you'd rather make your own. I think a rotary dial cell phone would be Too Effin Cool, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
That's an awesome idea.. an old rotary phone. I could patch it into a bluetooth setup so when you're within 10-20 feet of the car and someone calls your cell, it rings the old rotary phone and you can talk on it. Ooo and when you make a call, since near all bluetooth phones already have voice dial, you could crank away on the rotary numbers, then act like you're talking to the operator "Call Spanky McGee please.." and it calls em. Would be as easy as pie, just buy a $30 handsfree bluetooth, take it apart and run the speaker wires to the phone and the button wires to the hook. That should flip people out. Sweeeet.
I'd been wondering how you could make that work. Don't forget, the rotary dial already works. I think it'd be cooler to set it up so you had to tap the hang up button (whatever it's called) a couple of times to turn it on/get a line. That'd prevent overlap with the rotary part and keep you from accidentally knocking the phone off the hook all the time while you're driving. I mean, you'll be screwing with the firmware anyway. You might as well do it up right.
anyway I can pan the pic up to see the headliner of the Poncho? that sign got me curious..lol and what the hell kind of sexual device is that in the blue car? wow...
I was thinking the same thing!! haha Kinda feel let down after not seeing it. We need pictures of the interior on Jeff Meyers' caddy done by Fatlucky. I've ridden in this car and the interior is beutiful and comfy too!
