Keith ,I looked at the pictures again Pic #4 the left lane was the Chevy Sedan Delivery called The Blown Hearse,I believe it had a Blown 409 Ct. car also. The 3 car flag start is an optical illusion. We never ran 3 at a time The third car is waiting to go down the return road to tow a car back from the far end ,after it makes the pass.I worked and raced there in the 60s.

    Cool info, thanks.
I got the pics at Ted's in Marion this morning and a lot of the guys were remembering those cars and trying to decide if that was in fact Sanford. They didn't remember the buildings being where they are in the pictures. It's funny how things always look different than we remember.
So what's your vote, is that Sanford?

This is a great thread, so much history! Anyone know anything about this car? I'm trying to restore it and this is the best picture I have of how the lettering was. Also the caption is wrong, it was a 289 K code. It ran the 65 Winternationals and won class on April 25 1965 at Pomona according to the picture. It was also on Ford's drag team in 65.

Keith ,I am sure that is Sanford . I remember those wooden barriers between the lanes. Al Thistle had one of the first aluminum explosion proof bellhousings and when the clutch blew so did the housing. We would not pass them in inspection after that.

  12. This is such a cool photo...renting a truck and trailer to get your race car to the track! I wonder if my apartment complex will let me park a car here under a cover for six days a week........

I sent this link to A.B. Shuman, co-author of the book Cool Cars Square Roll Bars (if you don't have it, GET IT!). Here is his reply:

    Luke,
The first pic -- Floyd Masters's roadster -- was easy to ID. We used the same body, actually a cutdown cabrio, with the cowl intact (borrowed from my college classmate, Bob Connearney)-- as a highboy on '32 rails with a mild 303" Olds -- in '60. (The shot of me on the rear flyleaf of CCSRB is in the car.) This pic was taken in '63, first year of A&B signage. One other pic on that page is also from '63. All the rest look to be from '64. In '64, the strip was effectively flipped and, while the cars ran on the same runway, it was from the opposite end. That's why Hoop (no doubt, affable Hoopie Weinstein) elicited the comment about the strip looking different than remembered. I guess, with my scrapbook, I could ID other cars beyond those already mentioned on the HAMB.

What's ironic about finding the pix in a dump(ster) is I quoted Paul Aldrich as saying he was always seeking to rescue hot rodding history from a dumpster. He's old school so doesn't have a computer, so is missing out on this stuff.

    A.B.

  22. A couple of bad ass 33's! I like 'em because they look like they should. Not a morphed blob like most of the Pro Mod influenced alcholol fueled "gassers" that are currently running at "nostalgia" drag races.

The shot below with the '69 SS in the background was taken at Islip Speedway on Long Island in Sept/Oct '69. It was a 396 4 spd car.
I believe the car was owned by a guy who lived on Franklin Ave in Franklin Square right by the exit off the Southern State Parkway. Sorry but I can't think of his name.
I don't think I have any shots of this car - if I find any I'll put them up

    Glad your enjoying the shots!
Aren't these shots taken in the late sixties at West Hampton your car, before it was brown?
