Fantastic story, love the location of where it was at.
This shows that persistence DOES pay off.

Potter is south of Green Bay about 25 miles.

I actually know where there are 2 more coupes sitting out, a '51 that's an old custom with a '53 Chev grille and a sunvisor, and a 50 that's all stock. They're at a yard and the story I got was a guy struck a deal to buy them both, paid for them but never came back to pick them up. They've been sitting over a year since then. I told the guy I'd buy them if the first buyer never comes back. Just gotta wait it out.

There's also rumors of another one in a yard that the guy would sell but you'd have to pay him up front and then he'd dig it out. Apparently lots of people have asked about it but he won't move all the cars out of the way to get to it unless he gets the money first.

If I got those I'd have a total of 5. I've been into old cars/customs since I was a little kid, never saw any of these cars come availible before, and now all of a sudden it's raining Mercs.

Anyone want the "Last Ride Lincoln" for $1500? It's for sale in the classifieds. Why are all these cars tied to dead people in some way?

  5. Happy Halloween. I'd leave the cosmetics alone and get her driving.

    I can't beleive I am actually gonna say this...but...

Someone makes fiberglass quarters for those. I don't know who, but I have seen it with my own 2 eyes. They looked good enough to be convincing.

Might be a lower cost alternative to high dollar steel ones.

    Best haloween car thread yet!

    "The great pumkin Sled"!!!

seriously. don't do that. I haven't been sleeping well.

Nice find! Protected by Mother Earth!

Nobody makes squat for these cars, go figure. I have heard Gene Winfield makes a lot of stuff, guy I know here in Jersey did a 50 coupe last year and used his goods but I never have.

The repop coupe quarters are only 49-50, I have seen some glass quarters for a 4 door (51) but thats it, and awhile back. I guess parts suppliers figure all these cars are done or long since crushed?

  17. Awesome find. Going to a good home anyway..
    Re your Lincoln.
I have a '49 Lincoln coupe that had sat in a shed for 40 years.
Glad no-one decided to drag it out into the weather ... lol

    I JUST NOW got that!

Sucks no one makes patch panels for these cars, beyond rocker panels. I'm going to have to find the thread where people were asking "what do you want to see repopped" and post there. I bet if someone made a patch panel for the forward half of the quarter panels, they could sell a ton. The back part usually isn't the part that rusts out. In the end though, that'll be a fairly simple piece to make if I have to make it.

Don't I know! I've been oogling the patch panels for the shoebox Fords for years wondering why they never re-popped the same Merc parts...

My quarters are TOAST. The BACK is rotted to hell, but the FRONTS aren't as bad, but they are still bad...especially where they meet up with the rockers. I was just going to weld it all together anyway, so making the patches shouldn't be that difficult. The back part, however, has a compound curve and tapers. Not as easy to reproduce with my limited sheet metal forming tools here.

If and when you decide you need them, don't waste your time with the $59.00 eBay rockers from Michigan, if you need rockers. Pay the big bucks for the good eBay ones. I learned my lesson, you can see a side by side comparo on my website: http://landyachts.homestead.com/mercresto12.html

I have no doubt, that when you finally get around to this one, you'll hammer it out just fine, based on some of the other posts I've seen by you. :D

thats a cool story and an even coooler car , great save

  24. Great score!

I do have to ask about the custom 51 you mentioned with the '53 Chevy grille....my dad is from Green Bay and his first car in '58 or '59 was a '51 Merc that he put a '53 Chevy grille in. I'd be curious to know more about the one you know about.....

  25. You might be surprised how well old tubes will hold air. I took one off a car that sat upside down rotted in half to put on my Chevy to roll it on, and it's the only one of the four that even still holds air (!) ... the others leak down over a few weeks.

  26. I instantly thought of Thunderbolt and Light foot, think I'll rent the movie. thanks for sharing.

  27. Tires held air. You must be living #%&. WHY DIDN"T U JUST TURN THE KEY AND DRIVE IT HOME ! Cripes !
