17 inch wire wheels???

I'm looking at a set of wire wheels a buddy has, they are 17 inch, 5x5 1/2 inch bolt pattern.. What would these have came on? any information is appreciated..Thanks

 

Probably 1934 Ford but other manufacturers had the same size with different style spokes and center sections.

 

28-9 = 21" wire
30-1 = 19" wires
32 = 18" wires
33-4 = 17" wires
35 = 16" wires

I think that's how it goes...

 

I have a set on my 30 roadster.

 

'36 was the first year of the *wide fives* type of solid wheel......no spokes......

I thought he was asking about 17" wheels. The '33-'34 Ford 17" wheels were 17X3 1/4..........'35's had 16X4 wires while 1936 did not run wire wheels. They ran a 16X4 wide-5 steelie with a 10 1/4" bolt pattern.

My 33 Packard had 17 inch wheels. Don't know bolt circle.

I have 2 wheels that are 17 and spoked. they are 5x4.25 bolt pattern. They can be for sale if you need them.

 

I've got catalogs going back into those years and Ford is the only one that used 5 on 5 1/2. And 33-34 are the years for 17s. Stu

 

29-30, maybe 31 Plymouth were 5x5 1/2 as well, maybe other years.

The Plymouth wire wheels I had were 19's though.

 

so what would be the biggest tire you could put on these is they were 33/34 ford? Could a 700/17 fit or no way? Thoughts?

 

Desertratrodder - That's good to know. My stuff only goes back to 34 on Plymouth and shows all being 5 on 4 1/2.

Tire size - My earliest Ford reference doesn't give tire size for a 3.25" rim, but a later catalog says the late 30s Fords should use a 6.00" (recommended size) or a 6.50" (max size) on a 3.62" rim. So, logically I'd say you're looking at a 5.50" or 6.00" max on the 3.25" rim. Stu

I've got a couple dozen old wheel catalogs dating from 1941 to the 80s, plus the Hollander Interchange for some years. The '41 is a Zipper Wheel catalog that reaches back to the early 30s for most applications. Some, like Zipper, are dealer literature that cover various manufacturers. Others are K-H, Budd, Motor Wheel, and Accuride brand specific. Stu

 

I've got 2 17" wires and 3 19" wires sitting in the garage collecting dust. I was gonna save them for a project, but now I just found out my wife is pregnant with our 3rd kid. If anybody wants 'em, PM me.

 

my '27 coupe has 17's on the back with a 650 tire. I don't see whay a 700 wouldn't work.

 

This had 7.50's on 17" Ford rims. (Same chassis, different bodies.) I know of a number of others that run/have run 7.00's and 7.50's on 17's with no trouble.

 

I've got the 17's on all four corners. 750's in the rear, 550's up front. Driving the hell out of it.

 

Anyone know the bolt pattern for 35 chevy cars?

BigDog - fronts are Firestones, rears are STA's, Specialty Tires of America.

 

The book says 34-35 Chevy Master had 17" x 3.62" wires with 6 on 5 1/2" bolt pattern. It says 35-36 Master could also have steel disc wheels same size. A 1936 Standard had 17" x 3.25" steel disc with 5 x 4 1/4 bolt pattern.

As for the use of the 7.50s, no doubt it seems to work. But I doubt the manufacturers would have recommended it.
