not pass it ,When it was sideways the nose was
at the bottom and the tail was up on the cushion.

    Bob East 1972 Clovis.jpg
I may be bending the rules of this thread a bit, but I found this pic of Bob East (Mr.BEAST) early in his career getting over a wheel at Clovis Speedway in 1972 driving the Pop Miller Sprinter. This kind of qualifies because these cars had bolt on cages and I know for a fact Pop's car was built in 1968 by Ray Wilson of Phoenix.

Not to be picky but it's Rodger with a D lol I showed the picture to Edmunds, here is what he had to say

"Yeah, Ward and Edmunds, that's Van Johnson standing in back, the track was South Mountain near Pheonix. I ran good that day, I was running second to Len Sutton, then knocked a front brake line off when lapping a slower car, Oh well."

On the subject of Edmunds, A while back someone posted a pic of his mid 60's super modified. #54 ( I can't seem to find it). That car is still fairly intact and is in the process of being restored by Billy Wilkerson out here in California.

Sure looks like a sprint car under there to me....

  17. The no. 54 had the original aluminum body that ALL Edmunds bodies were copied from. If this is the car, I wish someone would post it.

  18. I wandered into Autoresearch in Anaheim in the early 80's. Edmunds had sold the business but the original aluminum body was hanging from the rafters still wearing its pearl paint with red and blue candy scallops.

  19. That is nice to know. The last story I had was that the car made it all the way to Kansas City. I was concerned the body might have been lost and even worse the car itself. But now I know.

I'll try to get some pics if I make it up to Wilkerson's place in the near future. The original paint looked to be in pretty good shape, so he's restoring it as is. The late Paul Kneirim did the original work.

  21. Edmunds supermod.jpg Since your talk'in # 54, here it is.
This pic has been on my wall for years.
Here's what one look's like when you try to make it a sprint car.
Oh well better than no Edmunds at all, it still is nice to have setting around the shop

Thanks to Joe Heisler, I finally found a period picture of my 1939 midget racer as built by Orville Lane in Detroit. It shows the car as first put together with four wheel drive!

If anyone has more pictures of the car I'd be very happy to hear from them!

I know its not a sprint car but way back they called em super mods.. The car my dad did the engines for .. Was owned by Mick Katlin and in this pic at Sandusky Ohio Bud Wilson was in the car.. Funny deal .. I wrenched a sprinter for Buds son and modified also and now we go and set in the cheap seats and drink beer and watch.. No fenders for us we are open wheel fanatics :).. I look for updates to this post daily. Its friggin great....

This is one of those familar Dave O'Dell pictures.
Dave had a photo Studio in Indy, and would take the Offical Indy Shots.

Don Edmunds built some of the best race cars around, and he is one of the best model builders in the world. Here is one of his masterpieces,an exact replica of the Caruthers Midget in 1/4 scale.

The models cost more than the race cars sold for new, and they are unreal!
