Model a Split wishbones and setting caster

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by tomcantdoit, Jul 17, 2007.

  1. i have heard that you might have to pie cut model awishbones to set the caster, is this fact or a dirty dirty little lie?

  2. I have seen it done and read about it as well, but I've never done it so I don't know the specifics first hand. (wow, that sounds like my sex life...)

use a chop saw and cut down all but the bottom
then close it up and weld it...repeat as necissary till you get the caster you want with the wishbones where you want them mounted

    good luck

I would start with 6 or 7 deg of positive caster. Top of kingpin tward rear. That is a good starting point. mount your wishbones and check your caster. if you need more I would make a slice at the weld behind where the wishbone attaches to the axel. I used a LARGE cresent wrench to make the adjustment. I would do both sides at the same time. when you have it where you want it tack weld both and recheck caster.
    Good luck

If your mounts to the frame are already set in stone you would have to either bend or pie cut & reweld. Reinforce the cut if in doubt or just lower your mounts to the frame a little.

A bones are too short, depending on how low his frame is. He will probally have to pie cut, and as long as he can weld he will be fine.

I've seen stepped frames (front) that the guy didnt have to pie cut and the A bones worked nice....

Easy to do as others have said, If your concerned about your welding abilities get it done by a pro.

Does this a couple nights ago, really easy. slice with chop-saw. Gives you about 3-4 degrees extra with one slice. Pull up and tack in place. Weld thorughout. Simple and the way the alignment shop would fix it. Per Safety lane in Garland TX

For what it's worth After setting all fixed points in stone I needed a couple extra degrees, I had a spacer plate made with a 3 degree taper that fit between the spring and crossmember. It only needed to be about 1/8 of an inch thick and didn't seem to result in any spring or perch bind. Don't know if that would work for anyone else but it solved my issue.

  12. i have no problems with welding because i am certified welder in all processes :0)
-- and i already did the poiecuts and everything worked out dandy thanks for the info all

  13. Can you show us a pic of the final product and how low your mounts are. How many cuts did you make?

Perfect timing on this thread. I was just modeling my front end and trying to figure how to point my wishbone at the frame without removing the caster.

I think I'll try to cut the weld on the front boss, rotate the bone to a slight upward tilt, and reweld.
