So I’ve been searching the internet for a few days too no end on some info about Autolite carburetors…. I’m looking to put an autolite 4100 but stumped on the correct one. 64 galaxie 390 z code 4 speed top loader. I have a c4af dj that I picked up but I feel it came off a mustang! As far as I’ve found the carb part # was on the mustang with a 289 and the galaxie 390. What’s would the difference be between the two? Any info for a young pup would be greatly helpful because I’m driving myself nuts. Thanks in advance
Usually they used the letter Z as the 3rd character on Mustang parts, unless it was the same part that was used on something else. A is for full size cars like the Galaxie. Pictures are a big help on this forum, when you're trying to get info about something you have. Post some pictures of the carb in question.
Look at left side front fuel bowl . Throttle plate size is cast into the carb . body . 390 should have 1.21 throttle plate size .
I have later Autolite carb from 67 390 , it’s disassembled , I’ll trade for something if you want it .
That ^^^ Those came in different venturi sizes depending on the size of the motor. I'll note that Summit is selling an upgraded version of this carb as their house brand.
I have a Holley street advenger on it now. Just wanting something more original. The Venturi is a 1.12
That is a 260 or 289 carb , manual shift carb . As I said I have later style 67 autolite carb . , if your interested . I may also have a 4100 , I’ll check size on the one I haven’t looked at in 10 years for you also . If you don’t hear back PM me . I’m overloaded with sick parents at the moment . Flu is hitting here . They are not bed ridden , but just feeling lowly at the moment .
Thank you , think about the later Autolite , I’ll trade you for some kind of hot rod or Harley junk you you want to part with .
289 engines (except for HP) did use the 1.08 venturi carbs. That carb was also used on special model larger motors. The 1.12 pictured (C4AF) is a 64 manual shift carb. The 64 Galaxie also had a spacer plate under it with heater hose connections.
Ok cool then it should work out. I got it stripped down and waiting on jets and the rebuild kit. The spacer I have has the pcv hookup on the back side towards the firewall. I also have an early 60s aluminum intake on it now also a set of the cast longtubes.
Put any;4100 carb on it, it will look right, unless you are going for “ numbers matching” restoring. Bones
I used to get a lot of grief from "experts" who dismissed 4100's as junk... I personally never had a bad one on any of my big Fords, even a sick old 360 in an F100. Simple as bricks.
Well that’s kinda what I was getting at. If you get a sixties style 4100 it should be close enough for all but the most peticular folks. The very first 4100s had some features that might give it away. I have about ten 4100s, that I have collected over the years and most of them are quite similar. I sure it would take quite the coni suer to tell a 63 from a 64 or 5! Just my opinion! Bones
Blownsmlblok, are those C-5 cast iron exhaust manifolds? I tried to bring the picture up, but it blurs out on me! Bones
I can't remember if the spacer had the pcv port in the center of the back or not. The heater hose connections were on the passenger corner front and back of the spacer. I have always had a fondness of the 64. and had 9 of them over the years. Nice looking FE.
