Hot Rods For those that prefer color on their wheels.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Oct 19, 2017.

  1. Built that in the 70's for the family ride. After the little ones no longer wanted to be with us I got horny for a more Hot Rod look so one night I cut the roof off:eek: and redid the paint, got rid of the bumpers etc. and added louvers. Made my own s/s dropped headlight bar and on and on. Results! Vaun_0012.jpg
Sorry for the scratched photo the black paint was perfect. Anyway you get the idea. (Crazy Teenagers)
The first cut into that maroon paint was like cutting into my arm!o_O
It did not need that 4-1/2" anyway.:p

Great thread, Danny...I've had red wheels on many of my earlier cars, (1955-'62) then it was all 'Goin to the drags'...white wheels and black tires!
Black wheels and black tires were my preference from about '64 thru '66, then life changed everything!
My avatar shows my present wheel choice on my F100, (same type on my '50 F1)
    Red wheels still look 'official'...

The pickup "pops". The color of the wheels and grille make the car. Although the sedan is a great car, to me it just doesn't have the eye appeal as it would if it's wheels and grille were brighter. This coming from a guy with a red 40 w/red wheels. Don't like it either, just can't decide what wheel color would be better.

  5. I wanted the sedan to be simple and understated,a car that got lost in a sea of flashy painted street rods.

Painting the wheels & grille insert sage green was a impulse move that all my friends & my spouse hated so I knew I would get a reaction from others, good or bad,I liked it and that's all that mattered. HRP

Can't really mess it in the Avatar picture, but Mountain Dew green works for me. Bill

  7. I couldn't be more pissed off! This is the 2nd time my powder coating has failed on my wheels. First time I had my steel 41 Pontiac wheels sand blasted and powder coated white....rust began leaching out where the center was attached to the rims, showing on the front side of the wheels. I had all this done at a local truck wheel/tire store
This time I used a local dedicated powder coating business. Hell, I haven't even got the car out of the garage yet! Already I've found rust peeking through the powder coating on the edge of the rim. I'm going back to paint. Fuck this powdercoating crap![1[/ATTACH] 34wheelrust.jpg 34wheelscoated.jpg

  8. All I can say about your powder coating friends? is they did a piss poor job, they applied the powder coating mighty thin if rust is coming through.

Jimmy, the local PC guy has been doing this for more than 40 years and he knows to get in the crevices.

The company he works for does industrial powder coating and he has done a ton of wheels , frames and suspension parts. HRP

Called the shop that does my powder yesterday. Dropped off a set of vintage micro midget wheels 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything from them. She said they were done but they weren't happy with the final finish. They are going to burn them off Monday and re-do them. Should be done Tuesday. That's quality control there!

I have always painted wheels when I ran wheels that used paint. I was thinking hard about changing to powder, that is until I read "Rocky's" post. Now I am rethinking that. I never have been dissatisfied with paint I suppose I don't need to change after all.

I’ve purchased 3 sets of wheels P/C from Wheelsmith, never a problem.

I own a welding shop in the midwest rust belt. Lets just say that I have seen enough powder coated things, car parts and nearly everything else, that have failed to know I'm not spending my money on it.

my pos rusty 41 cad has later steel wheels. rattle can black over the original gm silver/grey in center and out to the area covered by trim rings. but i changed the look recently. now covered by later oldsmobile full wheel covers. and with those on i like the oem silver/grey on the exposed wheel rim. it makes the 15” wheels look a touch larger. i like the low maintenance look. (maybe that should be ‘no maintenance look...)

as to the colors on these cars posted on this topic i prefer the contrasting colors with a splash of brightwork. so many good looks even with body color too. it would be boring if we all did the same exact thing.

I’ve done both. Preference is powder coat for durability. Only time I paint is if wheels are pained the same as the body - never had luck getting paint and P/C matched.

Although I do mostly black vehicles (on and off topic) I’m that one guy who hates red wheels on black cars. Done some in cream or tan, favorite is a very dark color (green/blue/maroon) that almost looks black, but in the right light adds a dash of subtle color.

*** Had a daily truck once and was undecided between two colors. Painted lefts one color, rights the other. Seeing them on the truck I knew immediately which I liked - took me eight months to get off my ass and repaint the other two.

No matter how I try, they all end up with steelies and 40 Ford caps and ribbed beauty rings for her pleasure.

    Hello,

Ever since my brother bought his 51 Oldsmobile Sedan, I became the detail/mechanical worker. I did all sorts of things and my “older” brother just sat back in the shade and watched me work. (for rides to my own places…) Spray painting was getting to be “my thing.”

It was a good thing we lived near a big paint store called Standard Brands Paint Store with its bright yellow color building. They had the best selection of spray paints around. So, we did get a lot of different colors for our painting needs.
    upload_2022-2-26_4-1-38.png
My brother’s first 51 Oldsmobile purchase had color matching Pale Yellow wheels. When we took off the full hubcaps, the Yellow stuck our like a sore thumb. So, instantly, I got to work painting them Black. Now, the Oldsmobile had some character without hubcaps.

Black painted rims from 1956 to late 1957 when the Oldsmobile was painted a Lime Green before the sale to a friend.

Over time, including our years with the 1958 Impala and the 1965 El Camino, the rims got their share of color.

Painted it Black at first, then several shades of Grey, and finalizing in Silver.

During the post high school era, colored rims took on a new character look. It was now accepted as an option to the “no mag wheel” look that was taking over the hot rod scene. YRMV

Body colored steel wheels or black for me.
Lotta contrasting color wheels are to offset flat black, I don't use flat black as a finish, takes me outta that discussion. I like most of the contrasting colors I see used with flat black.

Prefer paint for wheels, but that means I have to prep and shoot it.

Powder has the convenience of being dropped off and they will prep and finish and you pick up, not a lot of paint shops will do that or the paint in their rack is so damn expensive it doesn't make sense versus powder.

I think paint outperforms powder in durability and shine when quality paint is used. Many of the comparisons are based on rattle can guys getting something powdered then saying powder is amazing - it's a perspective - having never compared to quality paint :D

Just my opinion, after being on a several years project for work comparing all of our paint specs to industry standards, available brands in the market and certifying what meets our specs.
Powder won out from the standpoint that it is an industry standardized color that can be verified easily, holds color better thru different film thickness of application, mix ratio and application rate basically no impact as long as film thickness are maintained, more environmental friendly for majority of companies we buy parts from, best chance to match from different applications. Ability to fade consistently over time across multiple manufacturers various applications versus paint.

It wasn't better in overall durability, or shine. Resistance to abrasion versus urethane paint was less. Once scratched the powder can maintain the film and allow water to intrude behind and lift large sections.

No reason for a big debate.

I'm happy for anyone that gets their car on the road or makes progress.
Pink wheels are beautiful if they're rolling down the pavement

Going with OEM 'Amber' coloured wheels on my 46 Olds to match original 2-tone scheme. I'm having them powder coated by the same business that did my frame; it was blasted and thoroughly primed before being coated. Resized_20211221_195222.jpeg
