HRM did a great article on the car in the Aug '63 issue, including a cutaway drawing. As a teen, I was intrigued: Slant6 motor with 3 webers, VW front suspension, dual circuit brakes, etc. On the cover, Smith's wife looked a bit unhappy, probably tired of posing with Smith and the car, baking on a hot runway.

40ragtopdown and everyone else who post pictures thank you so much for these pictures. They tell such a great story by them selves. It doesn't matter who they are or what they have done. Just a great look back in time.

Yes, the pictures tell us a lot, but the info provided by some of the guys here give us an even better picture of the times many of us never saw. I'll be 65 soon, a lot of the stuff pictured here was before my memory could have recorded it, or is from places I've never been.

I'm thankful those that have information concerning the pictures posted have been kind enough to share that information with us. Their wisdom, experiences, and knowledge help us all grow and learn more about the history of hot rodding.
I want to thank everyone that has posted on this thread! Gene

This reminds me of when Grandma & Grandpa went with us on a camping trip out west in the summer of 61. Dad always wanted to eat a sandwich on the go but Mom & Grandma would make us stop and drag half the stuff out of the camper to have a proper lunch, they got their way most of the time!

There would be more information posted IF the title of the thread was not

  24. It looks like this picture was taken at The Presidio, headquarters of The 6th Army, in San Francisco.
