I love that this thread is still going, i remember looking through these photos a decade ago.

 

This is not a Dragster! It is a Bonneville Streamliner sans body in which Noel Black was killed at over 400 MPH in 1970. The car was run 3 times at 3 different strips to garner sponsor interest and grab a few show bucks.

 

He also set endurance records on the Salt Flats with Mickey!

 

Here it is in its natural environment.

Needing a little TLC.

 

Sy Sidebotham Harvey Richardson Dave Creehan and their last AA/FD

 

Simple elegance. That's a sweet lookin' 63 Fuelie in the background of the bottom pic too.

 

This is reported to be a Cook & Bedwell dragster that set a national record of 166 at Pomona. It sure doesn't look at all like the one that previously set the national record at 163 at Colton previously. It had an entirely different roll bar set-up. It was also one the cover of Hot Rod along with me. I'm (one of the) guys with the white T-shirt and the Levi's.

 

Sorry if any of these are recent posts...was just doing a bit of reasearching on some drag racing history and found that ....if you see the heading "Queens of Drag"....mental note: it's not about women in drag racing..don't go there.

Uhhh …… I don’t think changing spark plugs is going to fix it this time.

 

That's a 1956 Fury in the back ground so it might be 1957 or 58 to date the picture.

A few more ...some of the odd ones
The early years just had to be a major thrill...idea's on how to go faster than the other guy , when the thoughts of going faster came before the thoughts of safely going faster.
Not saying that safety and technology is bad , a nd when your driving them your nuts are still up in the back of your throat .
Honestly....I think back in the days of experimentation in the unknown world of what it takes to go faster especially for the guys with the dirt under there finger nails and working in a dirt /wood floored little garage, is more exciting than the rubber gloved , computer key punching ,working in a laboratory type warehouse/shop that is unattainable for the average guy way of doing it nowadays.
Just my opinion....but I'm just a nobody...and I have had a hell of a good time being one.

I'm thinking some of those guys might have figured they had survived a war (or 2) and they would take their chances.
