  1. This is the same car the Greek Supposedly went 204 in. He added about 4 feet to this TE-440 Chassis Research frame, and had the nose made for it.

  3. He's already got weight taped to the front crossmember. Guess he needs more.

  4. Does anybody remember when Richie Bandel had long shoulder length hair ? I saw him that way at Connecticut Dragway in the 1960's.

    Hello,

The photo is in the late 58-early 59 time period. The short headers were reminiscent of the style of the race cars of the time.

“On the left, a very young Don Maynard, George Schreiber and an equally youthful Chris Karamesines. The year, 1959 and the location, possibly looking south in the pits at Union Grove near Racine, Wisconsin. Schreiber was the Greek's brother in law and part owner of the car until he went into the Army.”

NHRA early 1959 with The Greek designed custom equal length header pipes.

But, in December 1959, We saw the Greek at Riverside Raceway in So Cal with a full nose cone, color coordinated chassis and parts along with a cool Hilborn Injector Scoop. The Greek designed custom headers were impressive in looks and sound.

Then in April 24,1960, "The Greek" and Maynard unloaded an incredible 204 mph speed at Alton Dragway.

    Dean,
I was at Oswego in '62 or '63 (not sure which) when Chris showed up with the car that replaced the TE-440 (it had a single loop roll bar). I have a b&w picture of it, that I took with my Brownie, somewhere. It was so new that he hadn't had time to install a nose on it. He did a single run in the left hand lane and then packed up and left. I remember him coming off the line with relatively little tire smoke and the front end floating just off the track. He kept sawing the front tires back and forth as they occasionally touched down, which is how he kept it going straight. It was the first 200 mph run made at that strip and no one could believe it.

Fast forward to 2003, I was back at the Indy Nationals for the first time in forty year. My sons and I watched a guy (sorry but I don't remember his name) run the first 300 mph 1320' pass. NHRA said that the clocks must have malfunctioned, because his E.T. was too slow for it to be possible ( he was about .2 slower than the fastest cars were running that day). Within six months a dozen other cars were regularly going 300.

Remember in the mid-50's, when they said that it was scientifically impossible for a dragster to run 160 mph in a quarter mile. We all know how long that lasted. I also remember when some people refused to believe that an unblown SBC could run a 7.99 E.T. I guess if you live long enough you get to see a lot of impossible stuff happen.

If I remember right they said the car would self destruct if it went that fast. Kind of true sometimes.

You are referring to the Stuckey car^
The Greek had a lot of good looking cars but to me the ‘63 car built by Rod Stuckey was the best. It was bad ass with the low cowl, amount of engine dump and the bare bones look without front sheet metal. When the front end was added it just didn't have the same attitude anymore.

    Hello,

Our time at Lion’s Dragstrip in 1959-60 was pretty amazing. We were there when the terrors from Carlsbad showed up with their latest creations, the gold Dragmaster Open Chassis Dragster. Then, with the records falling here and there all over So Cal, the Dragmaster Chassis became popular in the drag racing circles. The Worlds Fastest Dragster at the time was Cyr and Hopper. But, within the year, up pops this new Dragmaster Chassis FED that took on everyone in So Cal and became the fastest SBC powered dragster for the records.

One big surprise was that the team of Cyr and Hopper went from a big hemi powered FED that won almost everything possible in drag racing, to a Dragmaster chassis with a Potvin supercharged SBC motor.

The new challenge was a Potvin styled 671 in front of an SBC motor, in a lighter, Dragmaster frame. Instantly, it became known as the “Worlds Fastest Chevy.”

When doing some research, I was able to come up with the original 1959 Dragmaster SBC dragster sound made in the fall of 1959 at the U.S. Nationals. I added it to the original 1959 Dragmaster film I took at Lions Dragstrip in the Summer of 1959.

I searched the threads and came up empty. Has anyone been to Winslow AZ dragstrip. It's in Winslow AZ at the airport, I ran there a few times when I lived in Flagstaff. It was on the grounds of the airport.
    Any pictures?

    Hey D,

My junior high school is to the “H” above the front wheels, in the background. On the railroad berm, we saw our first drag race from across the farmer’s field. My house is to the far right near the farthest tall electrical tower. It was a fun place to grow up, with access to just about everything close by. Terminal Island 3 miles, San Pedro waterfront, 5 miles, downtown Long Beach/PIKE, 3 miles, and Lion’s Dragstrip about 1.5 miles. When it was our time in high school, everything seemed closer, including Bixby Knolls.

    Nice photo by Doug Peterson.

I was at San Gabriel when the Greek first brought this Stuckey car west for Bakersfield. It was new, right out of Stuckey's shop so the Greek hadn't had time to wheelstand it. I was standing by the car as Stuckey was going over the details. Pointing to the then-intact key pushbar, Stuckey said, "Don't wheelstand it, or it will be your ass...literally, your ass." Obviously the Greek didn't listen to him.
