I'm not lame!! I am either brave or stupid!! Have been running a California tag on my hot rod for 20 plus years here in NC. My assigned NC tag is in the trunk just in case. No police problems so far.........

I run '58 plates on my '58 Tour-A-Home camper and leave the official plates in the camper. Haven't had any problems yet...and we put quite a few miles on it!

up here we can run them but much like most on here the require our mot approval the catch to that is send actual plates with money(no refund)and sit on your hands waiting approval.then pay a premium to register cant remember if yearly off the top of my head.

If you want CA YOM get in touch with @oldpl8s here on the HAMB. I bought the set for my '54 Ranch Wagon and a single '30 plate for a wall display from him. Good guy to deal with IMO

Another lame ass here.:) In Colorado, you submit a YOM form along with a pic of your plate. If accepted, your registration will show your current modern plate number and your YOM plate number under "Dual ID". You have to carry your modern plates in the vehicle.
I'll also add my name to the list of "I think original plates look better on my car than current modern day plates."
To the OP, hopefully you can find some originals that won't break the bank.

I was lucky .... in my license plate collection I had a pair of decent 53 Plates. I've got Iowa plates back to about 1914, at a swap meet I was looking for a nicer pair of 53 plates (they used the same plate for 53,54 and 55 with metal tags for the year) and had a brain "freeze" and bought a pair of nice 58 plates:( Oh well.

  9. YOM plates are cooler than any new plate, personalized or not.

  11. Call the dmv is the only true way. There are other ways to get an idea if your at a swap meet.

  12. A guy here wanted to use the plate on his 57 Chevy that his dad had back in the 70's, so he bought new personalized plates with the same letter/number combo, and runs the old plate. Genius.

  14. Probably not. The number/letter sequence will be different and the letter height/spacing will be different, but not noticeable to everyone. You’ll need to get the ‘53 tab to make it look real.

Some years ago I inquired with the Maine DMV about having replica YOM plates made to match my current registration. I was told that might not be a problem, but I never followed up further on it.

  17. FYI for CA people trying to do what the user SEEMS to be asking in the first place, Sequential Legacy plates have a KNOWN starting sequences, so the first #'s indicate the year that plate was assigned. the letter shapes and spacing might be different. a CHP may notice it and call you out on it.

If you have replicas place made to match that year, and run them as YOM plates you run a higher risk of getting called out on if you ever get into a traffic stop. The ticket price and penalty might be much higher than just doing it correctly the first time.

Also note that the extra price of having the YOM plates added and applied, is the same as having the Personalized plates.

Lastly most place that make the replica plates don't do the longer ones and will cost in the 100.00-150.00 range if not more to get correct looking copies. Either way still cheaper to wait it out.

And last currently the DMV is taking months to assign YOM plates, it not and essential thing and they are backed up, it too more than 6 months to get mine assigned. good luck.

Same process here in Oklahoma as far as keeping both plates “current” and carrying the new plate in the vehicle. We now have a sticker for the windshield showing the old plate is current and the new one in the trunk gets a sticker every year. Costs me an extra $20 a year or so to run an old tag.

This is a F/U to my prior post. The collector car plates, like I said, there's only one, and it goes on the rear of the car/truck. There's a one time fee, and then they're good for "life". If there are changes coming, I don't know about them, but hopefully, we'll all be notified when it comes. I only put the "identical", but blank plate, on the front to be different. There are limitations with those plates also; you can't do the D.D. thing, only to and from a repair shop, to events and shows, that sort of thing. But, I see guys in my city alone using them daily, driving everywhere, anywhere, all the time, so that is probably what is going to cause the State to make changes. Many thanks to those idiopathic morons! All it takes is a few; the proverbial, one rotten apple spoils the rest in the barrel. Makes little difference at this point as the Delivery has't been out of the garage in 4 years now; thanks to my wife's at fault car accident that cost the insurance company a lot, lady even tried to sue but lost, and our insurance cancelled us. Try getting insurance on a classic car after you've been cancelled. Makes NO difference my wife can't drive a stick, and has NEVER even rode in the Delivery; just because she has "access" throws a big wrench in the gear works. However, we're past the 3 year period of time, and our former insurance has even called us to come back. Too many things going on now, then throw in tax time, COVID19 protocols, and me just having another spinal surgery on 1-5-21, makes some things less important than others. Besides, the weather's really rotten at the moment, so the Delivery can just sit in the garage, get started every few weeks, and I know will be on the road again soon enough now. Or, my nephew can deal with it after I make my final exit. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Might be lame there, but here in Oregon they save me huge amounts of money!! It costs me $82 for YOM Special Interest plate registration, and that's for the rest of my life! A one time fee, with no renewal ever until the car changes owners.
So my car isn't original, but I love my '39 plates! And my '37 plates!

Not the first time I've been lame.

cops can and will be dicks from time to time. a buddy for whatever reason had an OVAL SHAPED Japanese plate on the front of his VW. the cop pulled him over, acted like he just ran over an old lady, and confiscated the plate.

The CHP in CA is a special fund agency. Their budget comes from DMV fees. They are aware of what's legal and what's not when it comes to plates. If there is something wonky with your plates you may get lucky and never get jammed up about it but then again?

  28. So, this guy who no one really knows where he is from asks a question that only his local jurisdiction can legally answer.:( I thought Baldwin Park was in India, but NOOOOO, he comas back with the answer he is from Mars. Now I do not know how many countries are on this planet earth but there are 50 States in the U.S. along with territories. So why is he wasting every ones time with this lame question about Mars when that is where he admits he is from? Wake up, go back to the Mars internet and ask there since that is where you are from. QUIT WASTING OUR TIME! Now, back to my Mason jar.:D

  29. The only Baldwin Park I know of is in the land of fruit's and nut's, California. HRP
