Technical Removing an old pilot bearing - With bread?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Nov 14, 2020.

  1. I guess we are never to old to learn new tricks but a old friend of mine says it's a old way of removing the bearing, I watched as he packed the bearing full of white bread and used a bolt to start driving the bearing out, He stuffed the bread in 3 times and beat the bolt until it bottomed out, I was dumbfounded when I saw it pop out. some guys use grease the same way....but I always seem to need the biggest slide hammer I can find, or a chisel.

Been doing for 35 years with grease. Never heard of bread but it seems a lot less messy.

  5. Used grease before.

I’ve used bread to solder water pipes before.Pack the bread in the stop the water from dribbling into your solder joint and cooling things off, when your done and turn the water in the bread just dissolves.

Neat idea Less mess then grease.

Just used grease about a month ago. I didn't have any round stock the right size to drive the grease in so I used the plastic alignment tool and after putting more grease in a couple of times it came right out.

  7. Like Jim, I learned years ago by using a slid hammer, but I watched my old pal Gary actually remove the old one and he made a believer out of me. HRP

I've done it with grease a number of times and have heard the old timers tell about using bread instead of grease.
We had a puller with a built in slide hammer designed just to pull pilot bearings out with in the school shop but some times you couldn't get the ends in past the back side of the bearing/bushing to have room to have it spread and hook onto the bearing.

Last summer the pilot bearing in my ot 302/t5 powered car started to make noise.

One of my buddies has a hoist he let me use one evening. A lazy friend came by to drink and insult us while we worked. I tried the grease trick but it wasn’t happening, lazy friend had my slide hammer at his house so we sent him to get it, and right at that moment it started pouring rain and he got soaked. While he was gone we got a slice of bread from hoist friend’s wife and got the bearing out just as wet friend came back dripping and pissed off :)

Nice to know that I can use my slide hammer if I run out of bread.

Wet paper towel works too. I prefer it over grease.

    Or what about this..
Pack the area behind the bushing with bread dough, put a cork in the pilot hole. When the dough rises it pushes the bushing out.
Well... it sounded like it might work.
    Moving on........

Always used grease, never bread, although I've heard of it. What I use, instead of a bolt, is a 3/8" drive, Craftsman extension, and a brass hammer. The "female" end of the extension fits the ID of the pilot bushing perfectly.

I've done it with both grease and bread. Bread is preferred method. No mess.

Only ever used grease. I am not a trained mechanic but thought that this was the only way to do it.
Off to google what a slide hammer is now, - yes seriously !
