Curley (and his kid) continued to race this car until the 2009 March Meet where Sr crashed it.

  5. Marty -

I believe Jet Car Bob Smith drove Prufer's "Power King" Fueler in 1963 & early 1964.

Later in 1964, Gerry Steiner got his first top fuel dragster ride in Tom's "Power King" Fueler ... with a 200 mph run at Fremont.

Here's one of my father's circa January 1964 photo's of Prufer's "Power King" Top Fueler in the pits (i.e., "not in motion") at Fremont:

    Fremont Drag Strip - January 1964 - Ektachrome 01.jpg

NOTE: Pat @pgan Ganahl used this photo in part 2 of his "Tom Prufer" article that appeared in TRJ #64:

Doesn't look too bad the way it is.

  11. Unfortunately, it was left out in a field for 10 years, unbeknownst to my dad...who was livid.
If not for that, I wouldn't do a thing to it, just drop in a fresh 426 and fire it up.

  12. I'm in the do only what's necessary get it running for cackle fests camp. Those stickers are hard earned.
Love the gold anodized front rims and hubs.

"Don't know where or when or who, but pretty classic shot...the days when you could drive your street car to the track and go racing..." thanks @296ardun

1959 Riverside Raceway, drive to the drags and go racing 40 Ford coupe & 31 coupe

    Hey Dave,

Nice photo of those great early days of drag racing, around 1959-60. It was pop off those custom hubcaps, empty the trunk, take the spare out, and uncap the exhaust cut outs for that extra performance edge…if there was one. We used to see a reddish orange 1940 Ford coupe at Lions Dragstrip during the gas coupe days. It was a hot rod that we would have liked to have built, but the Willys Coupe we chose had definite advantages over the stock or modified 40 Ford Coupe.
    upload_2020-7-15_3-23-51.png
The 1940 Willys Coupe wheelbase was only 104 inches, and it had a length of 170 inches. It weighed up to 2,512 pounds. The Ford coupe weighed 2970 lbs with a 112 inch wheel base and 188 inches length overall. So, the advantage was known to all future Gas Coupe racers and builders that weight and size would make a difference. But, for a dual purpose street legal coupe, the 1940 Ford coupe has it over any other body style. The additional overall length made for comfortable seating and driving positions. (from a past, two different, 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery owner…)

The 40 Ford Coupe we liked at Lions Dragstrip had a disadvantage against the top racer in the B/Gas class competition in 1959. Who wouldn’t?

At left, Chris Karamesines, racing J.L. Payne in Vance Hunt's Texas-based dragster, at San Gabriel, 1962. The race was for the No. 1 spot on the Drag News top 10 fuel dragsters. Notice the starter: it is Don Garlits. I saw the three race match...second race the Greek wheelstood so high that Garlits said he would have walked under his car standing straight up and changed the oil.

Loudbang if your referring to the downward angle that is called engine dump and that is the way they were built and some had more than others

No, in that photo it looks like the engine and or blower injector and scoop is canted to the left in the photo it is not vertical while the dragster in the other lane is normal straight up and down.

Check out the other injected car at the far right. Practicing its wheelie? (Probably on a tow hitch{?}.)

No driver now that I look for the third time.

  27. The "canted engine" is just lens distortion.

  28. I think you're probably right, but it seems strange that there isn't any apparent distortion to the spectators or utility poles in the same general area of the photo near the LH border. And you might have also expected to see some similar distortion near the RH border of the image.

Maybe the engine is leaning over a bit and getting ready to spit out its crankshaft.
