Technical BIG BLOCK CHEVY STARTER - GOOD 1's? BAD 1's?

I was getting ready to order a mini starter and a buddy of mine said there was a recent run of defects but he couldn't remember which brand. Anyone have any input?

 

I did ok with a stock replacement starter for a 1999 3500 pickup. It requires special bolts. The bonus is that you can find a replacement at parts stores, unlike the mini starters.

And the stock 99 starter is a mini starter...but it's designed well.

The numbers on the block looks like it was made in 1972. #3999289 K 72 GM 9 T

 

Retro-fitting the modern PMGR(Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction) style factory mini starter, like the DB Electrical link and Squirrel mentioned, is the hot ticket. Basically all you need to know is which flywheel/flexplate diameter you have, 14" or 12-3/4", , so the starter will have the correct nose offset.

Better than 90% of all the "mini" starters on the aftermarket.

The factory bolts for a 1999 454 have a metric shank, and a 3/8-16 thread, so they fit the modern metric starter properly to the block, which even in 99 used the old style threads.

it's the same starter, look up some late 90s truck with a 350.
