Projects Could I get lucky?

Headed to see a car I saw advertise for sale , 46 ford coupe with " racing flathead" with title , asking 4500. 00

You can buy a stinker for 20 grand or.a Jewel for 1500.
You never really know till you see it and even then....

 

Yeah, usually not but I gotta know . Nice older gentleman, said engine had isky cam, Edmunds heads and Edmunds 4 barrel intake with early ford 4barrel, my thinking is if someone used those parts they might have put some good stuff and soforth in this engine, it's a gamble.

 

Keep in mind......
A lot of sellers like that remember the car for what it was.....not what it is.
Seems like it’s priced reasonable for a good solid start.

It could just be a parts car or scrap....you got to go see it

I think I was lucky to have recently picked up this 46/47 Coupe for more than twice that price !

Well, a big NO , waaay too much rust, 2500.00 maybe . He did however have 6 flatheads that I told him I would think about. Car needed driver door botton, both quarters , apron below trunk , entire floor , o e rear fender was ok , fronts were fair,and thatwas with no crawling around, had so much crap piled on and around car , couldn't see everything. Folks need to prep a car a bit to sell , I see this all the time .

 

Unfortunately when someting sounds too good to be true it usually turns out to be a POS.

 

Sorry the deal did not work out...but yeah, it sounded too good to be true.....good thing you had a chance to check it out!

 

I'm a dinosaur. About prices/availability. My '46 was rust free, had engine removed carefully. Everything else there, including perfect hood. Paint was nice, original maroon.
Front seat was worn, but car was NICE. Long door 'Club' Coupe.
$12.00, cash to Billy's Mom. Condition: "Get it out of my driveway before tomorrow!"
Twelve dollars. 1960.
I got even luckier with my '55 F100. No rust there, either. 1972. $60.00.

The thing is , the guy had been involved in rods,
For a long time and he had to know this wasn't worth 4500.00 , just looking for a sucker.

Sorta , I guess to some , the car might be a fair deal but I do not want a project that will require tons of patch panels, actually I was more interested in the engine but thought I might get lucky and find a really solid coupe that I could do something with or simply sell after I harvested the engine .

 

One thing that really turns me off is junk and garbage in the car.
At least clean the trash out of it and make it where you can walk around it without a tetanus shot.

 

So, was the engine as described?

 

Last time I bought one that cheap was about 1975 - a guy had made an offer of $40 without a deposit on a 1949 Studebaker pick up that was in the old newspaper. Since I just cashed my pay check - I went to look at it and heard about the $40 and offered the owner $45 cash from out of my pocket. I held on to it for a few years. Have pics somewhere - think I got a little over a $100 at a swap meet years later.....good times !

 

Funny, I always had a different description for "Getting Lucky".

 

If you are asking me if I could get lucky, I really doubt it! But there is always hope

 

Well, it was atleast in appearance. The thing that Intreagued me was that it had a 4 barrell intake using an early small 4 barrel carb off a 57 ford 312. Carb was a model 4100 which made me think that this engine possibly was built way back. The old Edmund heads and intake seemed period correct it seems for perhaps the 50's to 60's but I am only speculating. The seller did say the guy he bought it from took the engine out of his drag car( forget what that was) . If that engine was built ( and I am assuming ) the way a drag engine might be set up in the period , it might be worth what he is asking for car but it might have cracks which is common, and it was stuck so I just felt it was too much a gamble at that price.

 

Yeah , I dont get it . I see this all the time. Campers for sale with crap all over the inside, dirty on outside, same with boats, cars and everything. It really dont take a tremendous effort to make something atleast presentable.

 

Well you did double your money and that is always purty good.
