Legendary drag racer Ben Griffin passed away on 29 April. I posted this earlier with two photos of his Mustang funny car, but it was deleted, "Mustangs are off topic here." I never knew that, or why, but I have always followed the rules for this site, so here is one photo of Ben's unblown FED and one with him in the Carroll Brothers fueler. Ben lived in Dallas, and passed away from a heart attack.

  7. He had settled in Anna, Tx and lived down the road from a friend of mine.....you could tell his spread from down the road - had a line on the shore of his pond out front of nicely restored tractors outside. Great family and all around nice guy....purchased parts from the family's dealership.

  9. This article was written by a Phoenix area high school student back in 1964 for her high school newspaper.

Masters & Richter in the Fremont Pits, 1964. I don't know who took the photo

Milne Brothers MoPar, Bill Hanyon drove either this one or one like it. The Milne Brothers had a MoPar dealership in Pasadena, CA.

Don Yates in the "Art Mikkleson" dragster. I have probably posted this before, but here is an update. Don Prieto, who many of you know or have heard about (repro of Tommy Ivo's Buick dragster, for example), noted that while Art is given credit for the dragster, he actually bought it from Don and Ray Yates. But he did not pay for it, but his name was on it when the car broke both speed and e.t. records. The Yates Brothers then took it back. That is Clark Cagle's Ardun in the car. Don Prieto knew both Don Yates and Clark Cagle, so he would know.

Can't get enough of Tony Nancy cars? Here you go. Kent Fuller crafted the chassis for this beautiful '29, with Buick power. Photo taken at San Fernando by Ken Crawford. Ken was in hot rodding from almost Day One at the lakes, and knew all the hot rod pioneers. His j.r. fueler, the Kenz Muffler Special, was a top competitor in its field.

That was Drake Vicones car back in the day, he ran a lot of Fords back in the day. Ran at Dover dragstrip. Go to the Dover site there is a lot of info on Drake. He is down in one of the Carolina's and was working for Jack Roush. His sons are racing Mustangs.

  17. Dave posted a photo of the Milne Bros. Mopar. What some may not know is that Jack Milne was a world class Speedway rider. He won the World Championship at Wembley Stadium, in England, in 1937. For a long time his restored JAP speedway bike was displayed in the Milne Bros. Mopar dealership. Jack was responsible for bringing Speedway Racing to the Orange County Fairgrounds in 1968.

I never knew Jack's motorcycle racing history, but I do remember that JAP bike in the Milne window. That was 56 years ago. I finally know the whole story. Thanks!

  21. Jack's brother, Cordy, was an accomplished speedway rider as well. There was only enough money for one to go racing abroad, so Cordy stayed here and cleaned up on, what were then called "short tracks"in the US. At that point in time the tracks in the rest of the world were made of hard packed cinders. You had to be one tough SOB to stand the roost from the rear tire of someone in front of you. Jack joked that he had to do well overseas because he hated the welts the flying cinders caused, and the best way to avoid them was to be out front.

This one pops up in this thread every couple of years or so and as Fordors notes it is Doug "Cookie" Cook in the near lane. The event appears to be the NHRA Nationals in Detroit which would make it 1959 or 1960.
