The Howard’s Cams Twin Bears car was built in 1961 and I think it first had iron heads and might have run at the Winternationals with the aluminum heads.
@1933_willys_77 , nice stuff to have in your collection. And just think, to most guys Arduns are rare. BTW, I see three in the photo.

    DDDenny -

As I stated, I've seen the heads (have photos somewhere) and talked to Don. They, the original Howard Cams, aluminum heads (all four of'em)...ARE...on the current car built by Don Johanson. He even took a header tube off so I could see the huge size of the exhaust port (AND the four stud pattern).
As seen on the catalogue page above.

    Thanks 33_willys_77 .

  6. Thanks @Fordors
I actually have two pair, hard to see but there are 4 heads on the shelf. One pair is NOS never used and still needs some machining, valve guides and seats installed.

    Hello,

The first time we saw the Howard Cam Twin Bear FED was at the March 1960 Bakersfield Smokers Meet. From the Drag News, dated March 12, 1960:

But, it was a regular race car at Lions for the times we saw it locally. It was one of the quickest and fastest race cars when everything was in order. The HOWARD CAM COMPANY had many innovations during this early hot rod/drag racing era. Here is an ad for the Howard Cam Aluminum Head from the 1962 archives.

As mentioned earlier, my brother was a Howard Cam fanatic. Although, we had an Isky Roller Cam with the first 283 SBC motor, when we went to the 292 SBC with a 671 supercharger, my brother at the advice from Reath Automotive, purchased a Howard Cam 8 Cycle Blower Spec Cam and lifter kit. He also bought an Hddoward aluminum flywheel and was this close to getting the Howard Cam Chain Drive Blower System, until the Isky Gilmer Belt System fell into our laps.

Had this aluminum set of heads was on the market back then, that was a possibility. But, like others, we had our Chevy heads ported and polished. We worked with what we could afford, what we had, and the results were sufficiently close to the national record in C/Gas. With the new infusion of money and the items we had on order, ready for pick up in the middle of August, 1960, that record would have fallen. (Hilborn two port, B&M Hydro, M&H slicks, and Halibrand wheels.)

    Hello,
It is a sad thing to hear of anyone moving on to the next place in the timeline for all of us. As far as Drag Cars in Motion, here is a film clip of Ed Garlits' first visit to Lions Dragstrip in So Cal. It was one of those 1960 days where everyone wanted to get a clear view of the visitor from Florida. The term "Garlits at Lions" drew a lot of unsuspecting people, thinking they were going to see brother, Don Garlits. The crowds made me figure out a better location for the motion shots on my movie camera.

Since this location was actually off limits to the public, this film clip is one of the only ones in existence of the trip out west for Ed Garlits. The tower side location was empty, as I was partially camouflaged by my friend (Mr. Childers, the ambulance driver from Dilday Mortuary) in his white Pontiac Ambulance.

Thanks for the cool shots and being present in 1960, for a couple of drag racing/hot rod teenagers to see some big time out of state racers.
