One of my favorite movies, the Griffith Park Observatory, cool old houses, hoodlums... Jim Backus wearing an apron in the kitchen. Cannot go wrong watching it. IIRC, he was forbidden to drive the Porsche until the movie Giant was completed, part of his contract.
That movie and American Graffiti is why I wanted a Merc. Here's a pic of my Merc with Griffith Park Observatory in the back round. Photo shoot for Car Craft.
I always thought that movie was weak and Dean was a lousy actor. he'd be nobody if he had lived. oh... what kind of wood does not float? Natalie Wood.
I grew up hearing and reading about the movie, don't think I actually saw it until the middle '80's. It's not a bad flick, but it isn't up to the reputation it has. Dean only finished three films, can't really judge him as an actor based on Rebel. East Of Eden was better. Hard to fathom how his character could afford a customized Merc, even if it was something his characters Dad had given him.
After watching the movie I discovered that it isn't as easy as the movie portrays to puncture a sidewall with a switchblade.
