Borrowed some letter punches to see if I could impress a legend to define what the light is for.

    20200212_172945.jpg
Put some paint on the front- being polypropylene the paint wiped off but stuck in the punched letters.

    20200212_173102.jpg
Uh, well. It's not easy to get the letters lined up. (Edit: Or even the right way up, just seen the N is upside-down!)

    20200212_173314.jpg
Illuminated (with the camera shutter adjusted so the image wouldn't bleach out) the legend is legible but it looks a little too homebrew for me. I'm just going to do different colors and call it quits.

I'd go for it. I think it almost looks "period correct".

Maybe I'll keep the words. Maybe not. I'll see how it grows on me. At least they're really easy to change.
    20200212_204804.jpg
    Off, they're fairly inconspicuous.

    20200212_204811.jpg
On, they're brought enough to be noticed. I've since swapped them round, red for generator (left) and orange for oil pressure (right) because the orange is more visible and that's the warning light I care more about.

GEN and OIL are so lame. Should read " death ray" or " levitatator"

I was thinking about fun stuff to put on it- MASTER ALARM like from the Apollo spacecraft but there was not enough space.

    So, OIL and GEN.

    Sometimes you just gotta concede.

On. In reality they are red and orange not pink, my camera doesn't like the red very much and makes the color go all funny.

Nope, just the ignition on. Oil pressure builds up quickly (thinking of adding a oil pressure cutoff for the ignition) and the GEN light needs a resistor across it, it's not quite a high enough wattage bulb to make the light go out without having to blip the throttle slightly. It's nowhere near 1500 RPM, more like 700-800 now, but 400 would be a better mark.

Oil pressure gauge is kinda slow. Took the old steel line and flushed it through with solvent them blew it through with my air line. Reassembled. Still slow. Guess that's the way it works (heavily damped).

I pulled the little coiled section I had to build to join the pipe. I noted that the end of the pipe had crushed down a little where the olive had grabbed it, and that had reduced the aperture a little. I opened that back up and flushed it through to make sure no debris had blocked it.
Had Beautiful Assistant hit the starter for a few revolutions and pumped oil all over the splash pan. That's not blocked. Put it all back together. Gauge is still slow as hell.
Spoken like Bruce Hornsby- that's just the way it is.

They are just slow. I had a '54 that was the same way and it only had 40,000 miles on it. You get used to the delay. The good (bad) news is it drops very quickly if you lose pressure while driving...

A brand new box of goodies arrived today.

    20200220_111436.jpg
Hotrod parts! Now it'll run like a Corvette because that's Corvette type points! (I wish).

Going to get that all set up to replace the mangled plate in my distributor, hopefully it'll improve the misfire.

Usually, when you put one of those conversion breaker plates in, there's no longer room for the condenser inside the distributor housing and you have to go to an external condenser. You can hang a regular automotive condenser out there, but it really looks kinda wimpy. You need one of these. This is a '49 Olds distributor with the same conversion done.

Absolutely right- this one comes with a nice little mounting bracket to fit the condenser on the outside- you can see it there on the right hand side. The screw that holds the cap clamp is used to hold it in place, and the standard flying lead on the condenser reaches the screw terminal that goes to the coil.

I'm just going to fit the standard wimpy one for now, but I'll keep that in mind! What's that one from?

You better get traction bars.....dual points & a tubman condencer....she's gonna fly.
Tubman makes those condencers....he's a sharp guy.
8 cylinders all in a row, dual points man she'll get up & go....
    Really neat Phil !!!!

Ooh, really smart! But yeah, I was thinking maybe a set of wheelie bars and a parachute

It should cut down the timing wobble at about 700RPM that's visible on my timing light- the tach needle jumps about a lot at that point too. The old plate is junk.

If I have time I'll fit it tonight. Can't go drive because the wheel's off and the brakes are in bits but starting it up will give a bit of an idea if it's better or not.

I agree. Every day's a school day, I'd never had to look for an exterior-mount condenser before.

I've got some here that are bigger than the coil itself, nice shiny aluminum. Rather outside the required spec (1.3F @100V) for the coil and points though. DC power bus smoothing kit. Gutting one of those and sticking it in place would be rather overkill, I think.

Just so you know, the condenser (internal or external) should be rated in the .2-.3 micro-farad range. Also if you have a generator, anything rated at less than 400 volts may be problematic.

If you used one though, you could probably get away with it by calling it a "Flux Capacitor".

Don't think I'd ever make it to 88mph!

    20200220_160305.jpg
Lifted the distributor out of the engine after work today.

    20200220_161133.jpg
Stripped it down enough to be able to put the new points plate in.

    20200220_163314.jpg
Had a "what the hell" moment and decided to strip all the rust off and tidy it up.

    20200220_164518.jpg
It's currently sitting on the bench drying. Bit of an improvement. I'll finish tidying it up later, gotta bring the boy to scouts right now.

Yeah, it's got a .33uF condenser that I'm going to mount externally. It's got a ballasted coil that puts out well; car is running a Delco 10SI alternator so odd transients are minimal, just RF noise which is limited by the bypass cap in the alternator housing.

Slight tangent. Does anyone know how (or if) the horn push button comes apart? Mine needs new plastic and the inside repairing.

Yeah, the assembly pops out like that, but I can't see if it comes apart in a fashion that would not ruin the lip.
