Still trying to figure this one out. Evidently it is not Bob Noice who drove his own Accessories Unlimited junior fueller and later shoed Jim Brissette's Hand Grenade T/F. Don Ewald also had trouble I.D.'ing the driver.

Newly discovered photo of Steve Pick and Joe Koenig of Long Beach showing the power of their DeSoto powered FED.

    Hello,

When I was looking at some old Drag News Paper articles, I came across this photo that I had never seen before. It shows a full on power run from the Lions Dragstrip starting line. The Spectator side film came from the 1959 files. The close up “in your face” film portion came from the “secret white Pontiac Ambulance” location on the Tower side. That portion came from the early, 1960 “all over Lions” filming project from back in those days.

How was this yellow FED different than the others running at lions during those days? The Pick-Koenig FED has two things that made it unique: a very large centrifugal supercharger mounted in front of the DeSoto motor and a hydraulic front suspension (see it in slow motion action) that sent all of the power back to the rear…that was the purpose of the geometry.

" Does ''The Underdog'' on the cowl help?"
I dug a bit deeper on the Underdog deal (after finding numerous cars/drivers that have used the name) and finally did find a listing for what appears to be "that" Bob Noice (Van Nuys, CA). Interesting that Ewald could not place him as owning/driving this car.

It is a Garlits chassis so I would say yes although I have never seen a photo of this car before.

He and Garlits were good friends and he funded Garlits' return to NHRA competition in 1984.

Don Roberts at the wheel of Tommy Dawes' AA/GD. Don later drove the King and Marshall and Jade Grenade top fuel cars among others

Roo, would the lack of diagonals be one of the identifiers of a Garlits chassis?

Yes indeed, Malone was quite a versatile driver, the lucky guy got to drive Novis at Indy.

    Hello,
This is one of the earliest films for Don Garlits' group from Florida. It was 1959 at Riverside Raceway in So Cal, Bakersfield with Art Malone driving. Garlits had come out West in March 1959 for the Bakersfield Smokers event. It was his first time racing against the West Coast racers. Tony Waters modified roadster won the event.

From that point on, Garlits needed more horsepower, so he added a 671 and injectors. The rest is in his vast racing history. We were fortunate to see his first efforts and film the events as we saw back in December 1959 and March 1960.

The photo in question was early 63-65 perhaps, but not the earliest arrival and competition for his racing group, if at all.

When Don Gartlits had the speed shop over in Seffner which is just east of Tampa he would take each new dragster over to Twin City Dragway which was located just off Racetrack Road in Oldsmar, Florida for a test run and Art Malone usually was test pilot back in those day's.

I think way back in the early 60's Art Malone may have owned the old Sunshine Speedway and Drag Strip which was located in Clearwater, Florida.

I know that in the early day's the Nelson Bros. James and Geter were doing the machine work and helping build the engines he used.

Jimbo, there is only one "T" in Garlits and the photo posted by Junior Stock is well into Don's career as the early days for him were the mid 50's.
