Do you think they had to un-chop it to fit into a class? Maybe they could run in a couple of classes that way.

I read the story and that is exactly what happened...chopped top not allowed so stock height cap produced installed and to the finish line...That was The Lou Bingham Coupe...

    Quoted...

In 1957 SCTA changed the rules which specified "no chop tops", the cars had to be stock height. So Lou mad a fiberglass cap that extended the top of his roof by 4" so the top of the car was now stock height. Look closely and you can see "J" hooks that hooked the rain drip rail to hold the top on. The car ran 128 mph in this configuration. [IMG] By now Lou had his own, used Indy car tires seen here. He towed the car to Bonneville with street tires on it and changed to these tires once he was at the salt.

Good eye and very probable explanation Oldioron...it was probably keeping the El Mirage dust and dirt out of the engine bay as they many times probably had open carbs with little more than bugscreens...

  17. I don't remember the owners name with the Roadster with the chrome frame, but it was built a long time ago, and the same guy still owns it, probably the guy in the picture is the owner. It's from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was in the Oakland museum probably twenty years ago when they had a display with Hotrods and Customs. There's a 40 Ford coupe in the Bay area with a chrome frame too. It to is an old build that has resurfaced not to long ago. Continental Plating in Oakland did the 40 Ford frame, and had to build a special tank to be able to hold it.

That's cool info Fat Ass Whitewalls Rat said it was posted in a thread he did...perhaps it was featured in another thread here?

Thats Show stuff I mean on the Highboy you see the frame but on the Coupe? I have a vision of it angled up 1 wheel off with mirrors and light and the angel hair...;)

I believe the 40 Ford was in the Oakland Roadster show in the early 1960's. The whole running ear was chrome and if its the maroon 40 Ford that was recently found it was sold to someone in the east coast last year.

For me it's a difficult choice...so many vintage Hotrods have the right stuff...but it would be surreal to go for a drive straight down the course...dust a blazing winding it out for 3 to 4 sets of markers then taking a leisiurely drive home down some winding roads and straightaways.
